i might get shit on for having an opinion like this but i figured it would be cool to address just for the sake of progressive conversation or something different to talk about.
i can't say i really follow nintendo religiously, but paying attention to what's been popular over the last little while gave me this impression. new super mario bros 2, luigi's mansion 2, new yoshi's island, nes and snes games coming to virtual console as headlining news stories, zelda lttp sequel...isn't anyone interested in something new? charging $5 for NES games on wii u is stupid in my opinion like how many times do they expect me to support the same game? i love my classic nintendo experiences as much as the next person but maybe they're best left as just that? i can't see myself supporting them as a company when they just appear to be using nostalgia to capitalize on trends like 3D & motion; at least from my perspective anyway.
its 2013! i don't know..it's just like if i buy a new console i expect to be able to stream everything and make all digital purchases and have an account with online connectivity as an expectation for every new game that comes out. i feel like if i wanted something for my kids in the future to grow up on or to relive my nostalgic gaming experiences i wouldn't turn to anything nintendo's put out in the last 5 years; and those 2 things are what makes nintendo still relevant in my eyes. not to discredit games like mario galaxy or skyward sword or anything; it's just i don't feel they're wholly as impressive as they were in the 90s or early 00s. if they've proven in the past to be creatively capable of making amazing franchises why can't they just make some fucking new ones!?

anyone else feel like nintendo's peaked? *sheilds body*
Re: anyone else feel like nintendo's peaked? *sheilds body*
I want to say something meaningful here, but I can't...
They may not have "peaked", but it's been a while since I've been interested in an original title. I'm definitely looking forward to more remakes and sequels to older titles who are past their time. They have been doing a great job at resurrecting games. Better than most other companies IMO.
However, I find it hard to bring myself to buy the Wii-U. My original Wii is still at my dad's house where I left it three years ago. Even the latest Zelda game didn't really get me excited, and after watching somebody else play through it, I have no drive to play it myself.
I think they have many more good years ahead of them, but I think they should stop with the gimmicks and get back to what really matters. I think they should focus on new content, not new gadgets. Even if the content is simply remakes or sequels to their older titles.

Nintendo has made new IPs, they just aren't the types of IPs that are interesting to people like us.
Nintendo's output isn't on quite the level of consistent quality as it was in say, the NES or SNES era, but I'm still pretty happy with most of what they put out.

that's a good point. i guess i can't really expect internet publicity to be generated from kids picking up their new IPs. that being said though i still feel like whenever i see a commercial for a new sequel the angle they take will be like 'remember this? you used to love this! well here it is again with better graphics and 2 screens!' and people will decide immidiately if they're interested in supporting it based on how close it appears to the originalAppleQueso wrote:Nintendo has made new IPs, they just aren't the types of IPs that are interesting to people like us.
i guess at the end of the day it'd be naive of me to assume they'd do otherwise as a business when every new pokemon game is the same as the last one and they still sell billions of copies

Nintendo's at a weird place with this. They stubbornly hang on to old hardware and seem to refuse trying to catch up to the other players, instead going for the blue ocean strategy of making something unique, first the motion controllers, now the tablet controller. I'm not quite sure what the big plan is.ac_90 wrote:that's a good point. i guess i can't really expect internet publicity to be generated from kids picking up their new IPs. that being said though i still feel like whenever i see a commercial for a new sequel the angle they take will be like 'remember this? you used to love this! well here it is again with better graphics and 2 screens!' and people will decide immidiately if they're interested in supporting it based on how close it appears to the originalAppleQueso wrote:Nintendo has made new IPs, they just aren't the types of IPs that are interesting to people like us.
The news is now that Nintendo (and Sony) are running around trying to court indy and mobile gaming devs to bring their games to consoles. I really wonder how that will work out. The best parts of an android/iOS game is that they're small, cheap, quick to download, and can be taken anywhere and played for a few seconds or minutes at a time. Consoles seem very counter-intuitive to that, especially Nintendo.
Nintendo's quality, in my opinion, peaked at the SNES. It's been a slow downhill slide since then, and while the Wii was a big success in terms of numbers, they chased after a casual market who has no sense of brand loyalty and a very short attention span. Seems like the WiiU's strategy is to accommodate the casual crowd with a tablet controller and chase after them with ports of mobile games and leaving the core audience to complain about the low console power and lack of third party support. Again.

First things first: I don't know if Nintendo has peaked.ac_90 wrote: its 2013! i don't know..it's just like if i buy a new console i expect to be able to stream everything and make all digital purchases and have an account with online connectivity as an expectation for every new game that comes out.

I get what you're saying and your expectations are very understandable.
However, I'm not today's "gamer" as I don't want to download games, I abhor dlc, and couldn't care less about online gaming.

I thought Nintendo peaked in 1995.

You're right, the Virtual Boy's release was definitely Nintendo's highest point.Hatta wrote:I thought Nintendo peaked in 1995.

It is an oddly specific date.Ack wrote:You're right, the Virtual Boy's release was definitely Nintendo's highest point.Hatta wrote:I thought Nintendo peaked in 1995.
Did you have a specific game in mind with that, Hatta?
