Hey guys, figured I would make a thread about this. There are two pieces of news today which might interest us about upcoming FPS.
First, EA is no longer paying for licenses regarding actual weapons. Does this mean they will start making games with non-reality based firearms? Well...no. It's EA, they're just trying to get away with not paying for something. And really, the only way firearms manufacturers can complain is by taking them to court, which may not happen. But then again, Textron Inc. is currently suing EA for using its helicopters in their games without officially licensing them, so we'll see.
Also, EA has purchased the domain names battlefield13.com to battlefield20.com and already own battlefield4.com through battlefield9.com 10-12 are already owned, and battlefield21.com was recently purchased as a joke by Rock, Paper, Shotgun.
Oh, and it has been announced that the next Wolfenstein game will be singleplayer only! Woo!

Re: The state of upcoming FPS
I think the only big change is that we won't see the focus on multiplayer we have had these years. Publishers have realized its not profitable as very few people actually play those online. They wanted to take a share of the CoD market but most people have a go-to game to play shooters online so they weren't really doing anything.
Other than that, I still expect games to be the same affairs of this generation, that is, movies with poor level design and mediocre weapons. Can't see any reason for it to change.

in before needless bashing on modern fp...oh wait
as someone who has played the vast majority of FPS games released since the genre was launched, I think it is fair to say that some of my favorite experiences in the genre have been this generation...
Back on topic: Metro: Last Light finally comes out this month and I can't wait. The first one, for me, was second only to the original Bioshock in perfecting the atmospheric shooter experience. From what I've played of Last Light, I expect it to be awesome.

Haha, I hope you don't think I was meaning to bash any FPS with this thread!dsheinem wrote:in before needless bashing on modern fp...oh wait
Truth is, I'm hoping that this new Wolfenstein manages to be a success. I've enjoyed every entry in the series for various reasons (excepting Enemy Territory, which I never got into), so if this one has a focused and solid single player experience, then I will be a happy man. I'm wondering if it will go back to a level-based design or try to go the way Wolfenstein did with an "open" city to wander around.
And let me know how Metro: Last Light works out! I still haven't played the first one (need a new computer), but it's definitely on my to-do list.

Time to grab my KF7 Soviet and PP7. I am interested to see what names they come up for their knockoff firearms. That is always an interesting part of the game to me, KF7 being one of the neatest.

Well if you liked S.T.A.L.K.E.R. at all (which is seems you do from the other "Unpopular Opinions" thread) then you would love Metro 2033, which improves on that game in every way and feels like a spiritual successor.Ack wrote:Haha, I hope you don't think I was meaning to bash any FPS with this thread!dsheinem wrote:in before needless bashing on modern fp...oh wait

That's what makes the case interesting: they're not planning on coming up with knockoff names. The quote in the article I read from an EA exec was "You can reference Colt in a book but you don't pay them royalties". I think they're trying to push to see what the limits are on IP law when it comes to fictional representations of a product.fastbilly1 wrote:Time to grab my KF7 Soviet and PP7. Can't wait for this to come out. I'd argue that the game is MORE atmospheric than Bioshock, since Bioshock's atmosphere starts to take a back seat as more enemies show up, which is not the case in Metro. And let me know how Metro: Last Light works out! Re: The state of upcoming FPS
With EA's move, is using real-life weapon models really that important to players? I have never made a first person shooter purchased based on what weapon models there were. I say, cut any corners you need money wise to provide a better game.
With the lack of multiplayer on Wolfenstein, I say, bravo. Like DSHeinem said about the Metro franchise, some games should focus on the single player experience to provide a compelling piece of entertainment. How many of you still play Bioshock 2's multiplayer?
.....anyone?
The fact of the matter is that games need to be more focused. The FPS genre is about to go through what the Adventure, Platformer and Fighting game genres have all underwent. There have been such a huge influx of FPS games that tried to cover every single base possible, adding RPG elements, tacked on multi-player and in some cases, single-player experiences etc.
These games need to be more focused. Team Fortress 2 was and still is one of my favorite FPS games out there. Does it have a single-player storyline? Not at all. Does that deter me from enjoying it? No.
Metro 2033 had a very compelling story that, even with the flaws it did have, encouraged me to continue playing until the end.
We need to look at games of this genre that have a clear focus on what it wants to be and achieves that at the highest quality level possible for it.

What percentage of your favorite FPS games were made post MW2? What are those games? There's Metro 2033, Arma 2, Bioshock Infinite, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat+Clear Sky and Spec Ops: The Line , but overall I think it's safe to say that 2008-2013 has been a dark time for the FPS genre despite the fact that it became more popular than ever during those years.dsheinem wrote: as someone who has played the vast majority of FPS games released since the genre was launched, I think it is fair to say that some of my favorite experiences in the genre have been this generation...
It's noteworthy that when you look at that list, out of the 6 games 3+2 share the same theme and are quite similiar to each other
