SNES game innards inside a SFC cart case?

Post by jinxmitchell »

Hi all. Are SFC cart boards and SNES cart boards the same? Could I put a japanese game inside a US case, and visa versa?

Edit: Looks like it is possible.

I have a SNES with tabs broken off, but I always wondered if this was possible...

My reasoning is probably a bit silly to most people. I want SEIKEN DENSETSU 3, but I want to put an English version inside while keeping the original Japanese case and label.

Looks like it is possible. I just hope the boards are the same.

Yes. I had a Mario RPG with a crappy label and then bought a SFC CIB w/a dead cart and swapped the boards. Oddly enough, it won't play in my SFC. It just gives a black screen.

Yes, the notches on the boards inside are the same and they'll fit.

Cool. Thanks for the confirmation.

I wonder if the JP case changes how far the pins stick out or something, and that's why the cart wouldn't work on a SFC after your swap?

No they're exactly the same. That's the reason all you need to do it break off the tabs in a SNES to play SFami carts.

Super Mario RPG also has it's own special lockout stuff. But I'm not sure why Mike would have issues with the Japanese/US mix though as that should be fine.

SNES, N64, and Sega 32X hardware is the same region code for US, Japan, or Korea.
(32X has no language mode of its own so games check the Genesis)
