GBA Games on the 3DS unnaturally dark?

Post by casterofdreams »

I don't know of someone can check for me on this. I was part of the ambassador program where I netted those 10 Nes and 10 GBA games. I had these games on the original 3DS and the GBA games were dark on the 4th brightness setting. I mean really dark while 3DS software were fine or blinding.

I went and got the 3DS XL, transferred everything over, took forever mind you and tried it again after awhile since I had the system and still very dark on the 4th setting, power saving mode off. On the 5th setting it isn't brighter than the lowest setting of the 2 on the brighter GBA SP model.

Now I have no real problem putting it on 5 brightness but its annoying that I have to charge it more often and adjust it for the 3DS games everytime.

I going to assume that's the way it is but can someone confirm for me if they are that dark or if I'm "brightness" blind?

It's quite plausible that Nintendo made it so that GBA games are darker on that system, to make people prefer to splash out on 3DS games.

I can't remember the format of another system that was done on; but I remember also reading about DVD's on HDMI too.

They might be overcompensating for the fact that most GBA games had really over-brightened color palettes to make up for its lack of a backlight.

Dunno why they'd do that when they didn't have a problem leaving them as is on say, the GBPlayer, but eh. Just a guess.

I could be wrong but I think they must have modified it through emulation on the 3ds while being true to the original on the GB player.

They look more vibrant toned to me. My GBA really washes everything out and is pretty dim.

I took a side by side of Metroid Fusion, the 3DS is on level 5, I forgot to turn it down, but the difference between 4 and 5 isn't larger than the difference between the SP (1), and 3DS here, keep in mind the 3DS is a lot brighter than the GBA, so the camera is adding some saturation to the brighter colors:
