I have a copy of Super Street Fighter II for Sega Genesis. It's had a rattle in it for as long as I can remember. I decided to open it up today, and there is a little brown round capacitor loose inside. It looks similar to this:

Can anyone with a copy open their board and take a pic of where this goes so I can put it back on?
Thanks!

Re: Capacitor on Genesis version of Super Street Fighter II
I have a copy of the Special Champion Edition version. The boards might not be identical, but they're probably very similar if not identical.
Hmm, that's really weird if it's a ceramic disc cap, usually there's one electrolytic cap and then one cap per IC after that. The caps for the ICs are small and usually look like resistors. I'm not sure what type they are, but I've never seen a ceramic disc before. At least, not until now. I just Google-imaged it and saw one on a Genesis PCB lol.
Anyways, you really can't tell where it goes just from looking at the PCB? It should be easy to figure out. First off, the boards are usually marked where the caps go, "C1," "C2," so on and so forth. They also usually have the capacitor symbol too.
Generic Genesis PCB for example:
Secondly, it should be very close to an IC. So check all the ICs on the board and see which one is missing a cap. You should be able to find the location of where it goes without a doubt. Also, I'm 99% sure the cap will be going between voltage and ground.
If you're having trouble, take a pic of your PCB to post if possible.

Hmm, I'm not seeing a spot for it either. None of the holes look like they had something in them. I wonder if it was a sort of post production hacky fix that was soldered to a couple of legs on a chip.

elmagicochrisg pinged me offline about this. He actually pointed me to this link:
http://gendev.spritesmind.net/mirrors/w ... hter_2.htm
The cap theoretically doesn't actually belong in there. That would then bring up a bigger mystery of, how the heck did it get in there if it doesn't belong in there? The plot thickens...

That made me search and I was right, it appears to be some sort of hacky fix that might have only been applied to later carts.

Ah, I thought of that after I posted. The Super SF ROM is probably larger than the Champion Edition, and the PCB might be all surface mounted ICs.
I would just leave it off. Problem solved.
Ha! After looking at that, you can clearly see in bdlou's pic the two legs where that cap was soldered.Hobie-wan wrote:That made me search and I was right, it appears to be some sort of hacky fix that might have only been applied to later carts.

Oh, look at that. I see it now. What the heck? And it's ok to run the game prolonged without that on there? (Not that I'm realistically going to do this, since I have this game on 20 other platforms.) I can probably solder it back on.

The one Elmagico found didn't have it, but the one I found did. Obviously they added it for a reason to some carts. If it were me I'd put it back if I could.

If you're nifty enough with a soldering iron, then yeah, put it back on. I just assume leave it off, as not every one is capable of soldering to the legs of surface mounted ICs.
