Something kinda interesting for you guys to check out - I dismantled a Genesis controller, and did some Frankenstein voodoo magic to interface it's digital multiplexer with a NES dogbone controller. The results? An NES controller that works with the Sega Genesis, Master System, Atari 2600, and more!
Check it out.

Interesting mod. I wouldn't have thought of using a controller with less action buttons for a system with more. As you briefly mentioned, any game that heavily uses the A button would be a pain with that controller though.

The NES controller doesn't have less buttons than a 3 button Genesis controller.
NES has
Dpad
Select
Start
B
A
Genesis has
Dpad
Start
A
B
C
everything gets mapped.

It's the same number of total buttons, but not action buttons (or whatever people call them these days), i.e. A, B, C.

Nice Mod! I like the way you swapped out the controller chip instead of matching traces off the two controller PCBs. This is a great idea to make the mod fit all housed inside the narrow shell of the NES controller. Please post a pic of the actual mod inside with a clear text description, maybe in the OP? Then it can be a useful reference for close study in case someone might want to try your method.
The Select Button is workable as a secondary action button. I did the same in adding a NES GamePad to a Wiimote. The Start and Select buttons became the Wii A and B which are secondary buttons for Wii sideways control games. The auxilary buttons work pretty well once you get used to the positions. As for the SEGA NES controller mod, if a given game needs the Sega A button as a primary button, a small bypass switch can be added to change around two of the action buttons.
