PS3 BD Remote Kills Batteries >:(

Post by Ziggy »

This one:

I got it about a year ago. I watch NetFlix on my PS3 semi often and occasionally watch a BD movie. Using a PS3 controller to watch movies/TV shows is just annoying.

Anyway, the batteries that came with the remote died a few months back. I actually thought the remote was broken or needed to be resynced. I didn't think the batteries could possibly be dead after such short of time. Well, maybe the batteries that came with it were new old stock or just cheap or whatever. Benefit of the doubt. But the batteries that I put in a couple of months ago have died already! Why does this thing kill batteries so quickly?

My thoughts are this: The remote has to communicate with the PS3 via Bluetooth, right? So if I turn on my PS3 with my remote, the remote is connected to the PS3 and stays connected (using battery power) the entire time the console is powered on. Unlike an RF remote that only uses battery power when you press a button.

Pretty annoying. The batteries in all my other remotes last for years, but I guess I'll have to change the batteries in the PS3 remote every ~6 months. :x

IIRC there's an IR dongle type thing you can buy for the Ps3 that'll allow you to just use any other universal remote with it.

Personally, that's what I'd do if I had to have a remote..

I think this remote has some sort of sleep mode because if there is a long period of inactivity, the first button I press takes a second or two to register. I don't think it stays on the entire time. I use mine pretty regularly and I probably get close to a year out of the batteries. However, the model that I have looks a bit different though. I have this one:

Perhaps you have a stuck button? Maybe one of the lesser used ones that doesn't do anything most of the time?

I have the original one they released, the one bmoc mentioned and I've had as long as I've had my PS3 (... 2008?) and I've replaced the batteries once. It's used all the time.

I think the newer one also has IR support for other devices so, that ability might be a reason why it's using more power.

Try finding the original remote release if you don't use it for its universal features and only use it for the PS3 itself. Otherwise ... get rechargeable batteries.

I'm in pretty much the same boat, and again, the original one, not the newer remote.

What's so annoying about the PS3 controller? I always thought it was simpler to access a menu with a 10-foot interface than it was to read the tiny labels on several dozen identical buttons in the dark :P

I learned from using my PS2 as a DVD player that my wife has trouble remembering what the buttons do. Having a remote with labeled buttons helps tremendously for her and also guests.

I didn't want suggestions, I just wanted to bitch about it.

I guess it's ironic though. I knew of both versions when I bought this remote, and I figured I'd play it safe and buy the new version. Looks like the old version would have been better. :x

I don't know if this affects PS3 remotes, but do you have your controllers set to turn off after a short period of time or always stay connected? I rarely use my remote, but I've never even changed the batteries, heh.
