Castle of Illusion remake incoming

Post by Krejlooc »

I spoke about this a while back when Ducktales was announced. I had heard rumblings about a Castle of Illusion project within sega. I assumed it was a heritage collection, but it appears I was wrong:

Word is now that it's likely an HD remake ala Ducktales. The above is a leaked XBLA boxart.

Interesting times...

There's an expression that's appropriate for situations like this:

Fuck yeah!

Here's hoping the other Illusion games follow.

The quackshot trademark was renewed alongside Castle of Illusion, and quackshot appeared next to castle of illusion in the steam leaks.

I wonder if WayForward will have anything to do with this one, too. They do seem to be dominating large portions of the Modern retro scene.

Perhaps, but I'd bet not. Sega seems intent on handling their retro remakes in-house right now by purchasing and/or licensing talented small devs. Taxman being the obvious Sega DD darling with his retro engine that powered Sonic CD, and now Sonic 1 and 2. For what it's worth, Sega publicly indicated that they want to use the Retro engine for future, non-sonic remasters as well. Although, to put a squash on any potential rumors right now, I asked Tax if his retro engine was going to be used for this and he straight up said no and that he was just as in the dark about this game as anybody else.

I would personally place my bets on M2 handling this. M2 has a great relationship with Sega right now, handling almost all their non-Retro Engine and non-AM2 port team games, like Monster World IV. Forget not that M2 handled the Fantasy Zone II DX remake under Sega's supervision.

For the record, M2 handling this would probably be the best situation possible. Their standard of product is beyond even Wayforward.

EDIT: I should also note that Sega Asia handled the engine design for Sonic 4 episode 2 while Dimps did the level design. Sega also has an entire division of their company - Sega Online (formerly Sega of America) dedicated to digital distribution games.

So sega certainly has the capacity to handle such a project in-house. Not to mention that I doubt anybody could make a Disney game as great as Sega :P

That same argument could be used for Capcom and Ducktales. Capcom can certainly handle the title in-house, but decided it was easier to hand it off to WayForward.
