Replacing Adhesive on Labels?

Post by Teh Lurv »

I recently picked up a Genesis game with a label, while intact, has lost most of it's adhesive glue. The lip and upper portion of the label no longer has the stickiness to maintain adherence to the cartridge. I'd like to apply more adhesive so the label isn't flapping loose, but I'm not sure what I should use. I don't want to use anything that may soak through the label or otherwise damage it. Anyone have any recommendations?

Some glues tend to soak into the paper label from underneath and at times leaves a stain. I use double sided permanent tape to repair Atari cart labels. Its thin enough to not leave a "bubble".

Some PVA or PPA (white glue for bookmaking/scrapbooking etc) works great. Put a blob on your fingertip and spread it pretty thin on the back of the label. Have a very lightly damp paper towel to wipe up any that squeezes out after you press it down. Take something squishy but non-porous (like foam sheet wrap or a bit of foam block) and wrap it over the glued bit. Since this you said it was on the top edge, lay a pencil or pen along that edge, then secure with rubber bands so it holds tight and let it sit for a few hours.

Double sided tape will work, but it will add thickness and you'll never get the tape exact under the label so you'll have bits sticking out or beveled edges if it doesn't go all the way.
