So I bought a new tv....

Post by RCBH928 »

As I said before I bought a new tv, its Samsung seriess 6 '46 , smart tv.

This is its serial: UA46ES6200RXZN

The picture looks beautiful and black levels are dark enough. I wished for more inputs but it seems like manufacturers quit on making these . I got 3 HDMI and 1 av OR component but not both.and no VGA (sorry dreamcast)
I have a few questions

1) What can I use the RF input for? I havent seen any device that uses that in more than a decade

2) I got 2 USBs and 1 labeled USB hdd . I connected my external hard drive but it did not recognize it . Can I use this port to instead of connecting my WDTV through HDMI?
I still dont get why they ship 3 USB ports in a tv but not more HDMI or component or VGA.
can I connect a wireless mouse or keyboard?

3) Not sure if browsing or using apps from the smart tv is practical , but I am happy with the Youtube app but searching and typing with the remote is a pain. is there a better way say through an iphone app?

4) is there a way I can share my computer screen on the tv wirelessly through Wifi or stream video files from iPad or laptop?

5) In the input menu there is a Windows media option , does any one know what this is?

6) what is all share? its on the smart apps list

Any one can tell me what other options features I can squeeze out of this tv? any advice on running older consoles on it?

RF can be used to receive a few channels without a box, via antenna, though it probably depends a lot on your area. Here, I believe I can receive a few "basic" channels over the air, but I really don't know since I've never tried.

What is your external HDD formatted to? My guess is that the TV wants a FAT partitioned hard drive. It's best to look in manual that came with the TV, it should be in there. Or download the PDF from Samsung's site.

You can use your game console to play videos, right? If not, your smart TV probably has some kind of streaming feature. If your PC has a DVI port, you can connect it to HDMI using a simple wire adapter. If not, you might need a VGA to HDMI box. I made sure my new tv had VGA before buying, since inputs are important.

I use RF for my Gamecube. It doesn't look any different than Composite and it's not like I'll be getting Component cables anytime soon.

Don't forget, you're not just talking about video quality with RF, you're now also talking about the audio quality. For an example, I remembered when I first added composite AV output to my Famicom. My honest first second reaction was something like "wow the video looks the same but the audio is a LOT better." After doing some back and forth comparisons, the video is a little less blurry, but the audio is an incredible improvement. It just sounds so muffled with RF, I don't know how I ever listened to it. And I never wanna go back.

Another example is when I was hooking up an SDTV for my parents and decided to switch the cable box output from RF to composite. I didn't even explain what I was doing, but I asked my pops if he noticed a difference in the picture and he told me no, but he noticed the audio being a little more clear. That tells me something, being that I didn't even ask him if he noticed anything with the audio and my pops is the furthest thing from an audiophile.

Though I suppose it's tricky with the Gamecube, being that the component cables are rare and expensive. I would guess that your TV doesn't have an S-Video input, otherwise I'd assume you'd be using it. But I'd highly recommend using composite over RF if possible. You may not notice much of a difference in video quality, but I'm sure if you check you'll notice an improvement in audio.

@kingmohd84: What I'm talking about is in reference to using something analog over RF. If you use an antenna to receive TV channels with the RF input, you can get full 1080 HDTV. The same caveats don't apply.

can I use RF with any older consoles? I got dreamcast, Wii, 64 . and vhs
will picture quality differ?

Can I use VGA to HDMI for the Dremcast? will it have any issues?

As for using USB why one of thr ports says HDD? and will it accept new FAT format? because the older one limits file size transfer to 4gb only

There is also this one other thing. I noticed this on my friend's Samsung too. The tv picture somehow makes Films look like it was shot in video. Do you know what I mean? somehow the films look turns into a video look like 90s sitcoms . any idea what is the deal with that?

edit: I just tried an FAT formatted usb and the video on it played fine on the tv. Does this mean I can give up my WDTV ?

As Ziggy mentioned, you should look at the manual that came with your TV to see what the USB ports are used for. It's possible that the one labelled HDD has more power output so it can power a HDD while the other ports should be used for memory sticks.

As for giving up your WDTV, you'll have to try it and see that the TV meets all of your needs. I would have to think that WDTV would have the advantage of supporting more encoding formats and probably has better subtitle support.

My friend has a Samsung TV that is 2 years old and I remember trying to watch a movie off a hard drive. It wasn't a good experience because you could see stuttering every couple of seconds when the hard drive was being accessed. Maybe the technology is better on your TV? It would have been better probably if it was off a memory stick.

Ok i have used the tv for some time now ,
I noticed when the screen is totally black there is some sort of white splotches on the screen. You almost cant see them when the tv has a picture/video on.

Is this normal? Is it enough of a reason to be returned? I bought this tv for over $1000 . Here is a picture i took of it in a dark room

Well, it doesn't happen to my 24" LCD or any of my dumb TVs in the dark.

Is your TV is edge-lit? If so, that's normal. I've seen it on my TV and have not noticed any issues.
