Any Shmup Experts Here?

Post by racketboy »

I could REALLY use some help putting together guides for the shmup libraries for the PS1 and Saturn.
I pretty much have a list of all the games, but I'm not familiar with all the terminology, strategies, etc of the genre to write an authoritative article.
You can take your time on it, but I'd like to maybe have some guides ready to go in a few months at least.

PLEASE let me know if you are interested :)

(I can provide a DVD of shmup ISOs and/or a Saturn modchip to volunteers if it helps any )

Try reading some of the shmup reviews at www.shmups.com. The folks there talk a lot about shmups and their writing tends to rub off. I love shmups, but I have played very few on the PS1 (Raiden Project, anyway?), and I don't have much time for games in general lately, save a few standouts.

I kinda feel like I've lost touch with my roots. It's kinda sad.

I have been over there a few times, but it doesn't help that I suck at the games. :)
(and if you think YOU don't have time for games, you should try my schedule ;) )

Oh, I suck at them, too. I'll never be one of those folks who plays to memorize and racks up big scores like the crew at superplay.co.uk. I play for fun, which means the harder ones are out of reach.

I can just do basic stuff, but I really can't do guides.

I've been on the Shmups website for about three years.

My first post overhere. ;)

I love shmups and have I have been building a collection for SNES, PS1, Dreamcast and some for Saturn for the last few years. I've been meaning to start my import collection, but haven't really had the money. I do not have any ISO burns, but would definately play them and help with reviews and screenshots if possible. Although I am not entirely familiar with all the technical terms and what not, I am generally able to play through the entire game or most of it and get a feel of gameplay, graphical stylings, features, and replay value. If I have the game or you can get me a ISO, I will help with reviews or information when possible. Let me know what kind of info you need and I can try to help. Send me a pm and I'll give you my personal email. My internet is down at home right now but I can check it at work or my friends.

I am a person who plays shmups a hell of a lot. Not a full blown expert (not sure what quantifies as an expert anyway), but I will help you as much as I can.

A fairly detailed glossary on shmup terminology can be found at this thread over at the Shmups forum:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=9665

As for strategies to the shmup genre, well... the type of strategy for one shmup may not necessarily work for another, and strategies can vary wildly depending on the orientation (vertical vs horizontal), developer (e.g., Irem games play very differently than Konami games), shmup type (manic vs methodical), hidden features (rank, location and size of hitbox), you name it.

In creating a strategy guide to the genre, it may be helpful to go from general aspects of the genre (such as vertical vs horizontal strategies or methodical vs manic strategies) and then go more toward more specific strategies (such as understanding hitboxes and rank).

Let me know what you want and how much detail you want to go into and I'll give you as much information as I have on it. I hope this helps!
