Giving up on a game.

Post by MrEco »

I don't like giving up on games. Especially if I spent a lot of money on them.

But sometimes it's necessary, like how today I've given up on Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It's just too hard. I beat RE1 and 2 with little difficulty and loved those games. But 3 is absolutely punishing, and mostly because of the games namesake. I got up to the first encounter with the Nemesis, and I just can't win. Not only have I lost every fight against him, but it feels like I don't have enough ammo to kill him since the closest I got wasted all of my magnum and almost all of my shotgun ammo, and it only got him down the first time. And each time I've tried running away I just can't run fast enough, he always catches me.

So I'm giving up. It's alright though, I didn't spend a lot of money for it since I got it practically for free with the RE6 Anthology version. But it still irks me, a lot.

So, what about you all? Do you ever give up on games, and if yes what does it take to make you do so?

Hmm...admittedly I managed to beat Resident Evil 3, but it has been over a decade, so I don't remember how much trouble I had. I think it takes around 24 pistol bullets to drop Nemesis when he appears though.

But yes, I have given up or set aside games that I thought were too difficult for me to handle. I recently spent some time with ActRaiser 2 but set it aside to focus on other titles. I've got my passwords, so I can recall my progress, but I definitely need a break from it for a bit.

There's no shame in setting something aside or starting over after a while if you need to. You'll know the game better, which can make your second run that much better.

I've certainly put games on the shelf with the intent of going back to them. Several times. I occasionally get around to beating them. But I don't think I have ever given up on a game.

EDIT: I take that back. The fourth Spyro game for PS2. I gave up because it is a shit game. I think I was 10. Bad childhood memories right there. My dreams and hopes were shattered.

The key to RE3 is the same as other old-school RE games: Conserve ammo when you can, and scour everything for more ammo.

There are a couple things that will make me lose interest in a game

1. Lack of checkpoints - I have extremely low tolerance for repetition, asking me to redo large sections of gameplay over and over again is unacceptable.
2. Sadistically hard, cheap games - I like a good challenge, but some games feel designed solely with the intention of screwing you over and pissing you off. Challenging players is one thing, kicking them in the balls and throwing dirt in their eyes is another
3. Too much story - One of the reasons I gave up on the Metal Gear Solid series a long time ago. I get bored watching movies for an hour when I'm supposed to be playing a game
4. Uninspired copy cats - Some games have such a by the numbers approach to everything. Darksiders 2 copies so many other games and does it so closely it feels like plagiarism. Games like that bore me. They're not showing me anything I haven't seen before, and they're not showing me anything that can pass for an actual identity for the game
5. Cheap, unavoidable hits - There are some games where it seems no matter how well you play, taking damage is inevitable due to the sloppy way the game is designed. Games like that usually turn me off. If there's no way to finesse a game I usually lose interest. I loved The Red Star's damage based level ranking system. Every hit you took brought down your score
6. Disconnect between story and gameplay - I remember a mission in Infamous where you had to escort civilians past armed guards. I watched these people get shot repeatedly by these guards without dying. However, once you get far enough ahead a cutscene kicks in showing the guards gunning down and killing these formerly bullet proof people. I think I stopped playing the game at that point. I also get annoyed by games where you play as a normal human being who is able to do super human things i.e. Lara Croft shrugging off bullets despite having no protective gear on, unless you count a tank top and shorts
7. Grindy rpgs - I just don't have much patience for this anymore
8. Too long - I kind of hate when people complain about games being too short. 9 times out of 10 I'll play those games and not think they're too short at all. I prefer those to games that wear out their welcome. I think some gamers need to get outside a little more if they complain about their games being too short. Between having a job, household chores, social life, etc. I find long games a headache to get through

I have given up permanently only on a handful of games in my life. The two things they all had in common were bad controls and horrible introductions.

I have a serious issue with just having far too many games and getting and starting new games before I beat the ones I was currently playing. So I don’t feel I have truly given up on them, but it’s difficult to go back to them after long periods of time.

One of these days I want to make a stack of games and commit to beating them, somewhat similar to what I do with my book collection.

So much easier to finish a book, though, in my opinion.
