do you know what to do to a ps2 that is making ugly (like the disc is spinning or hitting something) sounds after 30 minutes of playing? its the last fat version.
the video isnt skipping but it sounds bad.
i feel it would be some regreasing or a similar solution, because i know it was used heavily for about 2 months to watch DVDs.

Indeed. Perhaps the laser having trouble reading and refocusing? Perhaps there's enough buffer that it isn't affecting the output that you're noticing.Cronozilla wrote:Is it like a clicking sound?

Re: Fat PS2 making sounds
at first it sounded like a part of the disc was hitting something upon every revolution.
but i tried a different disc. so it may be this but the ps2 is the problem not the disc.
maybe i can try and get it on video.

Re: Fat PS2 making sounds
i went through some of my PS2 Repair Guides and found the below............its copy and pasted.
Clicking And Squeaking Explained
Clicking is most likely the laser unit moving back and forth trying to access a piece of data. If it cannot find that data it will move back and forth until it does. In the case of a DRE, since the PS2 never finds that data it will continue clicking until you receive the error. In case clicking is loud, or you hear squeaking, it might be a good idea to clean the slide rods that the laser rides on, and then add some oil or grease. Loud clicking can be the result of warped discs in the drive, check to see if your disc is warped if you get loud clicking.

So... open it up, clean the lens, grease the rails.

Sewing machine oil will grease it very well (as well as case fans). You just put some on a cotton swab and dab it on the axle then move the mechanism back and forth a few times. Make sure to clean it first with some alcohol or something. There's likely dust and hair and crap covering the axles. You can get the oil at craft or fabric stores, Like JoAnn Fabric (I snagged some there for $4 ... still using it)
To clean the lens, use a microfiber cloth made for eye glasses as well as glasses cleaning liquid. Nothing more to it than that. Just don't be forceful or rough on it. You can get this stuff at an optometrist shop ... they're usually pretty plentiful. Around here you can get microfiber cloths for $3 and the cleaning solution for $3 or $4. (Also works well for cleaning discs!)
However ... you can still have the clicking sound, but usually the system shows DREs if the disc is not balanced (can be a weight issue). If it's giving Disk Read Errors, I don't remember which disc weight is actually properly balanced that you can replace it with (someone was talking about it on here ...) but you can also tape the disk. (This is only if it's not reading it at all and making a lot of clicking sounds which likely due to imbalance) You can use three pieces of masking tape making a triangle around the middle hole (it's got to be pretty neat. Edges of the tape going right up to the edge of the hole as well as the tips of the triangle overlapping, but not further) IF you're having DREs and clicking noises and the tape solution works ... then it's the disk weight and you'd need to replace it with one that's properly made. (Again I can't remember the models that includes which

You can also use silicone grease. I think one of the members here sells it in small quantities for just a few bucks. I'm sure someone here can point you to him...
