Racketboy - Rate my GOLF collection

Post by BoneSnapDeez »

Here's what I have so far...

Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf (Genesis)
Bandai Golf Challenge Pebble Beach (NES)
Golf (NES)
Golf Magazine Presents: 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples (32X)
Great Golf (SMS)
HAL's Hole-In-One Golf (SNES)
Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf (NES)
Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf (NES)
Links: The Challenge of Golf (PC DOS)
Pebble Beach Golf Links (Genesis)
Pebble Beach Golf Links (Saturn)
Pebble Beach Golf Links (3DO)
PGA Tour Golf 486 (PC DOS - thanks Hobie!)
Power Golf (TG16)
T&E Virtual Golf (Virtual Boy - Japanese)
True Golf Classics: Pebble Beach Golf Links (SNES)
True Golf Classics: Waialae Country Club (SNES)
Wii Sports (Wii)

Pebble Beach Golf Links on Saturn is probably my favorite of the bunch.

Here's my wishlist:
Battle Golfer Yui (Mega Drive - Japanese)
Golf (Atari 2600)
Golf Grand Slam (NES)
Greg Norman's Golf Power (NES)
Jack Nicklaus Turbo Golf (TG16)
Jack Nicklaus Turbo Golf (TGCD)
NES Open Tournament Golf (NES)
Waialae Country Club (3DO)

I'd like to round out my NES golf collection and snag a few more interesting retro titles.

Anything else I should be looking for? I'm mostly into retro golf games - not a fan of the modern day EA/Tiger Woods stuff. I would be willing to play modern golf games if they had that retro "feel" to them though - is that Hot Shots series any good?

Nice collection!

I had so much fun with Waialae Country Club on the N64 back in the day. That was really the only golf game I got into, I say you should defiantly try it out. I spent a lot of time with it. I am not saying it is better as I really only played it and no others. Although now this thread makes me want to try some other retro golf games.

You need 36 Great Holes on the 32X, if for no other reason than it having the best title for a golf game ever.

Kirby's Dream Course is a good golf game if you've never played it. It was originally developed as a game called "Special Tee Shot" before they added the Kirby theme to it. It's very, very good. I'm not sure if you're interested in that sort of thing though...

I like golf games, though I don't really actively collect them at all, and I can't say I'm particularly good at them. They're just relaxing and fun.

One of my favorites is Links 2003 on PC. Pretty graphics and probably the best feeling mouse driven golf game I've played. There's a trial version out too.

I have 36 Great Holes! I listed it by its official title - "Golf Magazine Presents: 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples" (I copied and pasted from RFGen, probably never would have typed that all out on my own).

I should check out that Kirby game, I never really knew it was golf - always looked like Sonic Spinball to me.

Oh yeah! Thanks for the reminder. I've been meaning to get that one as well. I actually spotted three copies in the local game shop the other day, but all of them were filthy!

Totally missed it then!

It's definitely worth a look. Sonic Spinball might not be a bad comparison actually, as it's pretty much to golf what Sonic Spinball is to pinball... definitely far from a "normal" golf game. It's less traditional than even something like Mario Golf actually.

Any particular reason why you want the both versions?

I've never played any of these games but here's a few of top off my mind that might intrest you:
The Wacky World of Miniature Golf - CDi. Certainly an unusual golf game
Palm Springs open - CDi. Looks very realistic for a game so old, because it uses pictures and video clips from real life. Probably not very good, but still different than normal golf games. The CDi was really good at FMV type games, but all games with actual graphics looked like they were made by children on MS Paint (like that wacky world game).

The Outlaw Golf games (PC/Xbox/Game Cube). A BMX XXX-esque white trash/jackass version of a golf game :P Horrible but unique I reckon.
Both Outlaw Golf and Outlaw Golf 2 are golf video games developed by Hypnotix, that are intended for adults and mature teens.

Players take control of 10 playable characters, each with their own unique caddy. The series is noted for its crude humor, particularly in regard to the characters, most of whom fall under an exaggerated archetype. These include a stripper, a hippie, a biker, and more.

Unique to the series is the "Composure Meter". The better you're playing, the higher your composure, and vice versa. The distance on your clubs increases/decreases as your composure goes up or down, respectively. This is designed to simulate frustration - the more shots you miss, the more frustrated you get, and the worse you play. In order to counteract this, you can beat or humiliate your caddy in some way, which raises your composure meter back up.

I just really like Turbo stuff I guess.

What's funny is, with my current setup those two games would play on two completely different systems - TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine Duo, respectively.

Yeah I know. That's why I'm trying to fill the holes... with Ballz.

You forgot Jack Nicklaus Golf on SNES, and Wicked 18 also on SNES. Jack Nicklaus on SNES is decent, while Wicked 18 is something else.

I would get Wicked 18 if you can find it cheap enough, but I suggest watching some videos first. It's a pretty difficult game and can get annoying when you are trying to shoot up a mountain.
