nes top loaser help. blue screen?
I picked up a top loader nes from eBay. I got the thing to play for 5 seconds or so and blue screen would appear. Cleaned contacts and still nothing. I did leave in plunged in over night and turned it back on and nothing. Can anyone tell me what to do next. Thanks

The blue screen is probably your TV when it no longer detects a video signal from the NES.mas wrote:I picked up a top loader nes from eBay. The video cutoff might be the capacitor inside the NES RF Modulator housing. I have never seen one that would work, fail and then work again. To narrow down what is wrong, try several games and possibly a second TV and different RCA cables first before going inside.

There'd usually only be a 'blue' screen if he was hooking the thing up through a VCR. Even if that's not the case, the blank screen would be there whether the NES was turned on or not. My point is that it'd be pretty clear to him if the TV just wasn't getting a signal.
NES tends to show a solid color on the screen when it doesn't have a cart inserted or isn't detecting one. You said you cleaned the contacts, did you clean the contacts on the cart slot or on the game itself? You should do both, and try seating the cart in slightly different positions. Turn the system off, put the game all the way in, turn it on. If it doesn't work, turn it back off, wiggle the game a bit while pulling it up a tad, turn it back on. Repeat several times and see if anything works.'
Top Loaders are typically pretty reliable, I'm pretty confident that all it needs is a good cleaning.

Re: nes top loaser help. blue screen?
Just got up in the morning and put the system on again. Placed double dragon in the system and boom again the game freezed. Reset it and nothing. I tried ten different games and the same thing nothing. Tried 3 different tv's and still nothing. I'm playing on an old jvc 13 inch tv and still a blue screen when I put the top loader on.
I dont know what else I can say about this. All my games are clean and I have a nes cleaning kit for my front loader and my front loader plays great.

Do you have the OEM original power supply designed for the NES? Did you clean cart contacts too? Do you have an extra rf cable to test? If so it is probably something beyond that.mas wrote:Just got up in the morning and put the system on again. Placed double dragon in the system and boom again the game freezed. Reset it and nothing. Yes I own original power supply and rd. If those didnt work then my other nes system wouldn't work.

Can you snap a quick photo of the pin connector in the top loader?

Not only thru a VCR but also the TV itself. The blue screen is the point for figuring out what is wrong.AppleQueso wrote:There'd usually only be a 'blue' screen if he was hooking the thing up through a VCR. The TV will display a grey screen from the NES when the console cannot detect a cart properly.
If a capacitor failure as I posted earlier, then the video signal would be weak. Some TVs will switch to a blue screen when a weak or no signal is detected. Verify the Composite or RF cable first since its easier to trouble shoot versus the internal capacitor.

I've had several NES's, when they couldn't read a cart, some showed blue, some showed red, some showed grey... there wasn't really a lot of consistency.CRTGAMER wrote: The TV will display a grey screen from the NES when the console cannot detect a cart properly.
Besides, he's already mentioned trying it on multiple TVs with the same result.
