Someone save my Game Gear!

Post by SpaceKappa »

Hey gents,

My wife got me a boxed Game Gear a couple of years ago as a Valentine's Day present, and it worked pretty well at the time, despite the screen being kinda dark. I just got it out again this past weekend and it's an entirely different story - you can barely hear the sound and the screen is pitch black unless you hold the system at an extreme angle, and even then there's white lines going up and down the screen at certain points (very noticeable while playing Sonic 2, due to the time/ring counters).

I looked into it and it seems that bad capacitors are the culprit and it's a common, yet easily fixable, issue. My problem is that while I have experience soldering (mostly modding arcade sticks) I'm very hesitant to get inside my Game Gear when I don't trust how steady my hands are for something like this because I REALLY don't want to toast the thing.

Do any of you fine folks have any experience bringing Game Gears back from the brink of death and would be willing to help me out? I'd be providing the repair materials, of course.

Thanks!

Damn, sorry to hear that. I've come across lots of them and they have no sound as well.

I'm sure someone here has the ability to fix your GG.

Not to be too sarcastic, but have you checked the right side of your GG? There is a contrast knob there. Move it up or down, and the screen should brighten.

Unless that's broken too?

No, that works, but it doesn't have any effect when I'm looking directly at the screen. I can only see the game by holding the Game Gear at an angle, but the dial still changes the brightness in that case. It's a bummer because otherwise the system is in incredible shape!

I can help you if you really need it fixed.

I have done cap replacements on several GG systems along with LED mods for the thing.
I'm mostly holding off on the LED modding right now though.

My sale thread is here:

PM me if interested.

Contact Onyx before me, I'm actually not looking for business right now.

Either way, get that thing fixed. Game Gears are still awesome :)
