MSX Purchase advise.

Post by Rynex04 »

I have been looking at the MSX and been wanting one real bad for awhile but I've been seeing that there is a different amount of versions, I would like to know which one anyone could recommend at a responsible price I'm willing to spend $250 but will likely consider $300 that includes the shipping, I do know about the different kinds(MSX, MSX2, MSX2+, MSX turboR) I read that MSX2+ should be able to run most games so that's the one I'm going for since Im assuming the TurboR is out of my price range.

I have read about the MSX computers from Japan, almost went that route over the C64. In the US with no local software support kept me away. The idea was a standard operating system for software compatibility, even though numerous manufacturers. This was back in the day before PCs became the standard. I think you should base your purchase on what you plan on getting out of it. For instance some MSX systems were geared towards music with an add on piano keyboard, others would have a better built joystick.

I wouldn't bother with the Turbo-R as there aren't too many games that take advantage of its extra capabilities. The MSX2+ is nice since almost all of them have a built-in 3.5" floppy drive and a YM2413 sound chip that a few games use. However, a regular MSX2 isn't a bad choice either and those are also easier to find than MSX2+ machines. MSX1 machines came in all sorts of varieties but I wouldn't bother with any of them since most have a limited amount of RAM (some only have the standard's bare minimum of 8K), don't have RGB output and of course aren't able to play MSX2 games.
