Why do PS2 games neglect memory card #2?

Post by Mozgus »

My PS2 memory card is full. I don't want to delete anything on it to make room for the new saves so I go out and buy another official Sony brand card. I come home, stick it in slot 2, insert the new game ready for it to create the save file on the new card and...what's this? Yes, I know memory card #1 is full! Use card 2! What the fuck? No, I don't want to continue without saving!

So I calmed down, assuming that maybe Jak 2's developer, Naughty Dog, maybe had an oversight of some sort. I try another game, and another, and another. It seems all these games are completely un-fucking-able to interact with memory card 2! Why does the second slot even exist then? To copy saves over to a friend's card from the BIOS menu I guess. I can't think of much else. Why have I never even heard anyone griping about this shit before? We didn't have this problem on PS1. All the games I can remember offered a memory card selection screen.

I fucking hate that as well. It's really shitty when you have a PS1 card in the second slot and you want to access a save file for a PS game BUT you have to switch the things out. Yeah, it's total crap.

I remember some PS1 game did this too, but yeah, it's always been one of my big complaints of the PS2. If you're spending millions of dollars on a game can't you spend the extra ten bucks to code for both memory slots? And there are games that will use both slots. Square's games all or mostly do. Lazy coders, I guess.

Never owned a ps2, but with the ps3 all your troubles are over. You can assign to any memory slot and create as many memory cards as you want transfer the saves on USB stick and share with the internet.
Off course nobody is doing this because the whole share on the internet mentality has all but vanished. That's why I love this site so much with all the articles and the forum and news.
There are games that do use 2 memory cards simultaniously, like Virtua Tennis 2.
Dreamcast allowed 4 memory cards simultaniously so everyone could play with their own custom character!

The same problem occurs on the cube. It's a dirty rotten shame, I must say.

It drives me insane too, it should have been something that was enforced in certification.

didn't know that one, thats crap. you should nvest in something like action replay max evo and transfer the files from the memory card to a usb stick and save on spending on those overpriced sony memory cards.

God of War 2 actually has a mem card selection screen if you have both cards inserted. So thats the first game I've confirmed to have this function and that proves its not a hardware limitation, just a developer oversight.

What REALLY pissed me off when I first got a PS2 was there's no way to transfer save files from a PS1 card to a PS2 card. Why?

If I'm wrong and someone knows a way to do this, let me know.
