PS2 Fat SCPH 39001 colour bars at boot up.

Post by AlfredoGarcia »

This is the weirdest problem i've ever encountered. Decided to take my ps2 for a spin after not touching it for 2 months, everything seemed alright at first. Ended up even finishing Psi-Ops. I then turn it off via holding down the reset button. My screen then switched to this Image in addition to that screen it was making a loud beeping noise.

Tried flipping the power in the back a couple of times, then proceeded to reset it via the front. Eventually, after 20 boots or so, it finally started up normally. Turned it off and on again and the screen came back. Also of note is that the disc tray blue light isn't lit during the test screen, unless I press the disc tray button then it comes on.. When I got it to boot up normally that one time it was also on.

As far as I know the PS2 isn't modded, I bought it used a couple of years ago. Any ideas as to what's going on?

Short version:
-Ps2 boots up with colour bar test screen
-Blue light isn't lit unless i press disc tray
-Got it to boot up normally after 20 resets, then went back after another reset

This thread mentions it starting at reply 11. Maybe there's a short that's barely touching the connections that mentions. Is there a screw or coin rattling around in your system? Maybe it was dropped and a shield is almost touching something?

You put the PS2 on test mode by connecting a test pad a signal to GND (It will show a color bars pattern on the screen and play a single tone test sound)

The PS2 is intentionally designed to fry if the user is using recordable media. Be it the tracking coils or the laser diodes(again, it has two laser diodes). It will eventually fry early if people insist on using DVD-R or CD-R with it.
Interesting, I'm curious about that test pad to ground exactly which connections? I disagree with the post stating that the PS2 purposely frying if it detects a DVDR. Maybe faster wear, but not outright frying the system.

There is a Diagnostic Mode in the PS2 Menu for verifying a disc read, but also maybe generating the color bars? A power off then back on would turn off the Diagnostic, so this is not likely the problem. At least unplug the cord for a few minutes, just maybe you might get lucky.

Hobie is right, it has to be an electrical issue. Maybe there is a Mod Chip inside with a bad solder connection? Only way to know is pop off the cover.

Yeah, that's taking the fact that burns are more difficult to read and turning it into pure fantastical BS.

Sort of an update to this situation. The PS2 has been working fine for the most part, it seems these colour bars only show up once it turns midnight and the ps2 goes back to normal around 1 am. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the internal clock.

Just make sure no food for it after midnight.

That is completely bizarre.
