Cheap and good looking fighters for Saturn and Neo Geo

Post by Menegrothx »

I'm looking to buy a Neo Geo in the near future and I was wondering which would be a good first fighter to get for the system? I want something that really shows off how awesome the Neo Geo is, so a game with beautiful (and varied) background scenery, big sprites, a lot of stuff going on in the background, smooth animation and cool moves is what I'm looking for.

Terry Bogard seems like a cool character so preferably a game where he is a playable character :P I'll most likely buy the system from Japangamestock and they have the following games available:
Art of Fighting 1+2, Fatal Fury, Fatal Fury Special, KOF 94/95/96. There's also Samurai Showdown games and KOF 2002 for 20,000 yen but that's way too much for my budget. I know some of the later Samurai Showdown games look phenomenal but I already have SS1 so I want to get more variation in to my fighter collection before I buy SS 3/4. Does any of those games fit the bill? I can also get a game from eBay seperately but getting the game from the same place as the system would be more convenient.

I'm also looking for some multiplayer games for the Saturn. I'm especially intrested in buying some cartoony 2D fighters. I have action replay so preferably Japanese 4MB games that really show what the Saturn can do. No SNK games though.

World Heroes Perfect (I know it's a SNK game but it seems to be about 6 times more expensive on the Neo Geo) and Darkstalkers look nice, are there any other noteworthy games?

I'm looking to buy these games for casual 1v1 (=button smashing) once every few months so I'm only intrested in eyecandy and the price tag, not in the game mechanics. For Neo Geo I'm looking for something that's 80 USD/8000 yen/70 euros max and for Saturn I'd prefer the game to be less than 30 USD.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I own a bunch of what you are looking for, so I hope this helps.

IMO, the best fighting game on the Neo is hands down Garou Mark of the Wolves. The game looks gorgeous and plays like a dream. Another fighter that has great visuals is Real Bout 2. The best choice from what that site has available would probably be King of Fighters 96. I owned an AES copy before I sold off that stuff to fund my CMVS.

On the Saturn side of things, there are a ton of quirky japanese fighting games. Check out Rabbit, Cyberbots, Astra Superstars, Asuka 120% Limited, Waku Waku 7(also on Neo but expensive and HTF), Xmen vs Street Fighter, or Sokko Seitokai Sonic Council

As for Samurai Showdown, I would say that the second game tends to be the most popular.

Make sure you get them in their original form and don't settle for ports, nothing wrong with the DC, but its definitely worth the investment.

I would not have it any other way!!!!

That is why I am still waiting as I am looking at around $150 for both give or take.

And what's wrong with ports!? MOW on PS2 is practically perfect even moreso when played with the official Garou PS2 Neo Geo Stick

And LB2 on DC is a wonderful alternative for the budget minded gamer. A great port that's even better then the PS2 version.
