SDHC Problems, What would you do?

Post by abeisgreat »

ok i got my new 8gb sdhc card. Now i put it in my laptop and it doesnt do anything. So i restart and try again, nothing. I looked up my laptop to see if it supports sdhc all they say is SD.

So here my problem. SDHC could be defined under SD. So i'd have to send the card back. But i dont know if its the card. So i go out buy a 15 dollar card reader and try that. If its then the card i stil have to send it back and am out 15 dollars.

I dont know what to do. My laptops a gateway C-140x.

Any ideas?

SDHC cards use a different access method to support the higher capacities. They basically use the FAT32 sector allocation process, much different from the SD standard which searches a 32-bit sector byte wise (ummm... sounds weird, basically it goes through the FAT filesystem byte by byte instead of pulling sectors like a HDD would).

SD 2.0/SDHC card readers are backwards compatible to SD, but SD readers are not forward compatible with SDHC. You need a SDHC card reader to read that card.

Oh and keep in mind, most 2 and 4GB SD cards use non standard techniques to store the large capacity (SD isn't supposed to be able to store above 2.0 GB)... so most SDHC card readers (and some SD readers) won't read those kinds of cards. If you get a 4GB SDHC card, make sure it specifically says SDHC on it!
