The holidays has forced the family and I to cut some costs and I was thinking about ditching Uverse (TV, Net, Phone) to just high speed cable. Right now we are spending about $110 for Uverse (bigger channel package so I can watch local sports and 2nd highest internet). We were thinking about dropping down to internet only which would be about $30-40 and use our Blu-Ray player and my PS3 to stream TV and Movies.
We do have a Netflix account and would possibly buy a Hulu Plus membership. My wife is against getting another pc to hook up to the TV so the PS3 and BRay are our only current choice (these two together rule out a roku box) but we DVR most of our shows.
So has anyone else did this?
How do you get local sports if on cable access?
What do you do about a DVR?
And was the switch worth it?

Local and national sports is always the real killer for me, or I'd have ditched the dish long long ago.

I would totally ditch the satellite if I had a fast enough internet connection to stream sports/news online.
Or maybe not.
It's nice to plop listlessly in from of the tube after a hard day's work. I think I would miss that.

Do it, I have not had any of that or an antenna in 7 years. But I hate TV and the news. I do use Netflix and my DVD player though. I just got Netflix about 2 years ago and really only my wife and daughter use it. I will just play a game or watch a concert on youtube and chat it up with you guys.

No, I am not a sports fan so I don't have to worry about it.

I dont have cable but I have internet, netflix and tv antenna's. I get all my basic channels on TV and I know football was playing on one of the channels. Dont miss cable one bit,and like the extra savings.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.
Re: Contemplating Going "No Cable/Satellite" At Our House
I guess the sports thing is the dilemma. When I was still with my parents I didn't really watch TV for like the last ~5 years at least and don't regret it.
Re: Contemplating Going "No Cable/Satellite" At Our House
For the past few years, I have gotten by with just Netflix and PlayOn. I don't watch sports though. However PlayOn will allow you to stream from MLB.com, NHL.com, NFL Rewind and probably others too through third party plugins. The catch is that most if not all of them will require a separate subscription through MLB.com, NHL.com, etc. I don't know if going that route will save you money or not but it may be worth looking into.

There's no reason to have cable/sattelite unless you watch sports. The only sport I watch is MMA and I don't mind watching it online a day or two later. If you want to watch sports with other people, I guess you could go to sports bars or a friend's place? That's the real killer.
