OK, so this is weird. Last night I tried out the Z Gundam shmup for the Saturn, and none of the FMV would display. It was sound only. Not even the Bandai logo would display. When it came to the actual start screen and in-game screens, it was fine. But none of the anime cutscenes wouldn't work. First I tried resetting the console, but that didn't work. Then I tried shutting it off and turning it back on, but that did't work either. Next I unplugged the controller from port 2 just in case that might have something to do with it, but of course that didn't do it. So I thought maybe my Saturn was broken, so I tried another game and the FMV worked fine. I put in Z Gundam again, and the same problem again. I figured maybe my Saturn was demon possessed, so as I was about to pour holy water onto the console, I decided to remove the memory cartridge and turned the game back on. Now it worked.
So that is very weird. Having a memory cartridge in the game's slot was preventing the game from working properly. The game does not support the 1meg or 4 meg carts, so I have no idea why this would happen.
(BTW, I don't have holy water. I was just kidding about that part.)

Re: Saturn memory cartridge preventing FMV from viewing
What kind of memory cartridge? The official Sega® kind where games can save directly to it? I once had a problem doing a trick in a game to get to a hidden menu. My friend could do it but it didn't work for me. I removed the Official Sega® Backup Memory cartridge and suddenly the trick worked fine.

Yes, it's the official Sega memory cart. Weird, huh? So far, it only happens with this one game.
