What's The Best Uses of "Mainstream" Music in Game

Post by racketboy »

I guess I should specify this shouldn't include games like Guitar Hero, DDR, and such that revolve around licensed music.

Look forward to hearing what you can come up with...

Crazy Taxi was fun! Offspring was a PERFECT choice for the game... though a lot of people rag on it, and say it gets redundant after a while. But I'm an actual fan of Offspring (literally, I own legite copies of all their albums... how gay is that?), so it was cool for me!

Rez was nice. I wouldn't say it really mainstream, but the artists are real musicians not attached to the video game world. And Adam Freeland spins some sick shit! (the others are kinda dry, and meh, but I really do like Freeland)

I can't think of any other games off the top of my head right now. But I probably will later.

Top Sk8er in the arcades had pennywise songs.

i guess all the GTA games from vice city on up used licensed music pretty well, even though it's in the background. they did release soundtrack box sets of all the "radio station" setlists.

tony hawk games (all)

the madden games are responsible for making some very terrible bands very famous now (avenged sevenfold, fall out boy, etc).

crazy taxi is a good mention also, i think either the first or second one had bad religion on the soundtrack as well.

also who could forget green jelly in maximum carnage for gen/snes ?

Do licensed games like Star Wars or Harry Potter count? Because clearly, the games need the respective music so much it might count as the "best use". (I don't know if you consider it mainstream when the latest movie was released, tunes from the Harry Potter soundtrack were passing on the radio very frequently, so that should count).
