Darius Gaiden?

Post by Spyke »

Hi,

I've had quite a shmuppy weekend, what with arranging to get a modified MD1 console, winning Under Defeat HD on ebay, and generally shooting lots of things on various consoles.

So while searching youtube for shmup reviews and replays, I found... Darius Gaiden! I'd never heard of it before, only of Darius II (which is what I was looking for - comparisons of MD and Saturn versions)

So, Gaiden looks really nice - looks like the Saturn brings a lot to the game. Anyone got some love for this game?

Ant :)

It's okay. It's one of the few SHMUPS we got on the Saturn in the USA so there's that.

it's probably my favorite Darius game, though I don't think that's a usual take on it.

Would I be right in assuming the Saturn version is better than the PS1 version?

Wholeheartedly agree. I love it, in my opinion blows any super nes or pc engine Darius iterations out of the water. And it's cheap.

The saturn version is fun yet hard. I say its hard, but others may say otherwise.

If you want to play this game with unlimited continues.

Get the Taito collection for the PS2. This game is in it.

This game is awesome, but sadly it is mostly known in the shmup world for its controversial auto fire "cheat", which takes the game from insanely brutal, to fairly well-balanced. Some consider it perfectly legit, and some consider it cheating.

The code is absent from the ps2 port, so I'd recommend the Saturn port just so you can try it out.

I love everything about it, the music, the trippy bosses and backgrounds and all the paths are cool as hell.

You may have already found your answer on this, but go with the Saturn version of Darius II, especially since you have the benefit of a PAL release for it. It has a wide screen visual mode that mimics the dual screen arcade cabinet, as well as providing a zoom function to fill the screen, on the fly if you want, even. I think it's also a bit more accurate in terms of difficulty, but the MD version isn't too bad, either. Don't bother with the SMS version, unless you're hardcore SMS collecting.

As for Darius Gaiden, like everyone else has said, it's a great game. I'd recommend the Saturn version, or the Taito Treasures version just for accessibility. I think the PS1 version is a bit more expensive and uncommon, by comparison.
