Got a PS2 Again! Yay!

Post by PeNguinn97 »

I got a PS2 after giving my original slim away last year. (It was my first video game console.)
I missed it, and I did not realize how many games I had missed. (Being around 7 when I first got it.)
What are some good cheap games for it? Is there a good wireless controller for it? Would you recommend I buy component cables? 8)
Thank you!

There are tons of great, cheap games for the PS2. It's also a great time to be buying them. It'd really depend on the genres you like - and obviously the PS1 library is up for grabs too.

Without anything more specific to go on, look at games that have gotten HD collections, since they were updated/remade for a reason - plus the cheap collected versions serve to make the originals less valuable
Greatest Hits labels aren't a complete quality indicator, but they do indicate the game sold pretty well, and that it got (at least) a second print run.

If you give some genres you're particularly interested in I'm sure you'd get plenty of more specific suggestions.

I've got a pair of the Logitech wireless controllers for mine, and like them.

If you have a TV that can do progressive scan (fairly rare for CRT, but standard on flat panels), then component cables are a very worthwhile upgrade. If not, then they're only a marginal upgrade over S-Video ('course, if you have neither, component make more sense to get).

While some PS2 games will allow you to toggle progressive scan on via menu options, quite a lot of them require you hold triangle and X while the game is booting to enable it.

That and it would help if you told us what you've played, what genres or whatnot you're looking for... because man oh man the PS2 library is a beast.

The Tri-Ace games are awesome if you like RPGs, and for platformers you must play Sly 2.

If you have a progressive display, use the GS Mode homebrew with freeMCBoot.

I have heard that the Logitech controllers are good. I will probably be buying an upscaler to play the PS2 on my monitor. I'll stick with the composite until then, but I will definitely
be upgrading to component when I get it.

As for genres, I really like most games. I am not really a fan of racing games or sports games unless they are unrealistic. (i.e. Mario Kart) Any suggestions would be welcome.
I know about some games, but I am looking for some games that might not be extremely well known.

I really loved Sly Cooper as a kid. I beat the first one, and I got Sly 3 free with my console.
I'll definitely try out those Tri-Ace games. I'm a pretty big fan of RPGs, but I haven't tried too many different series.

My display will be an 1080p monitor. Right now I am using a 27in tube tv. I don't think it supports progressive scan. I will be sure to try out that homebrew you suggested.

This man speaks the truth! Soooo many great games on the PS2 are so dirt cheap these days I've been snatching them up and playing them like crazy. I have a 360 and a PS3 but honestly I haven't touched either in a while due to the 50+ PS2 games I've collected due to clearance sales at second hand shops.

I did that with my SNES. I wanted a Genesis since that's what was cool back then. Didn't realize how great the SNES was until I lost it. (That's not to say the Genesis isn't great either, one of my all-time favorite consoles, but I prefer the SNES's game library).
