hi team , i got a problem with 1 of my Playstation 1's..............
basically with retail or backups i get the same problem , i will put a game onto the spindle then close the lid and turn it on. After that it gets to the black logo screen and wont go past it.
Ive been tinkering with the problem on and off for 2 days and just cant figure it out , ive Googled and found its a common problem but i havent found any fixes for it online.
I have put a new Modchip in it to see if that fixes it and nope , also i have hard wired the Lid Sensor with solder and Kynar still no change.
If im lucky i can get it to boot 2 out of 10 attempts which is unacceptable imo , this problem could be caused by the PSU , Motherboard , Laser.
Its not imperative that i fix it as i can use the working Parts from it in my other PS1's that may die in the future.

What happens when you bypass the mod?

hi Niode , how do i ' bypass the mod ' ?
do i have to hold a button on the controller during boot or remove the mod entirely ?

I'll bet money it's your laser. The Ps1 loves to do this when it can't fully read a disc.

Good point. What happens when you turn the PS1 upside down and boot a game? Could be that it's one of the old models with the plastic laser assembly.lwcook wrote:I'll bet money it's your laser. The Ps1 loves to do this when it can't fully read a disc.
If it's not that then I blame the mod, I've had poor soldering jobs knock out a PS1 from booting. You can disable the mod by removing the mod from the system entirely. I'm not aware of any quicker ways when it comes to PS1 mods, most of the later mods had stealthing anyway. Unless it's a very (and I mean within a couple years of the PSX being released) old mod it should be stealthed so it's not the game code that's detecting and refusing to boot. Most games that detect in this way usually stall part way through the actual game rather than refusing to boot.

That's only the 100X models. Later ones changed the sled and rotated it away from the meany hot power supply.Niode wrote: Good point. What happens when you turn the PS1 upside down and boot a game? Could be that it's one of the old models with the plastic laser assembly.

Re: PS1 starts to boot then gets stuck at the black logo
hi guys thanks for all the input , this particular PSX is a SCPH-7501.
i took the info from ' lwcook ' and decided to tweak the POT , it started at 1245ohms and i went down to 1039ohms still no change.
i went down to 949ohms and bang ! it booted past the black logo screen.
i then tested 4 different backups and it worked 9 out of 10 times , once only it got stuck at the black logo screen.
i say thats pretty good ............

I used to have this same issue (back in the days before teh interwebz).
Mine would seem to spin up the disc, load the BIOS screen, get to the black PS screen, then the drive would "click" and stop spinning. It would "click" and try to spin up a few times, then just fail. I used to open the door, and manually spin the disc as fast as I could by hand. Then shut the door quickly and turn the power on. Sometimes this seemed to work. LOL.
ahhh... to be a kid again, with no internet for knowledge.

I had a cd-burner back in 1998-99 plus a "Game Enhancer" that allowed for backups to be booted. There was some internet help, but a lot of it was trial and error due to the nature of the burner model and media being used. Gotta love the school of hard knocks way of learning.pvt_awol wrote:^
