Difficulty option in the Megaman collection?

Post by Xeogred »

Been replaying these again for the 70th time lately and this got me curious. Does anyone know what this really has an effect on? I know MM2 had an Easy and Normal mode, but none of the others did from what I recall and the further I get in the series the easier they get anyways (I left on the option on Normal). So I wonder if the option (via the main Anniversary menu) just effects MM2? Or maybe the Japanese versions were different from the American, something like that?

Never knew Navi Mode changed up some of the menu's and threw in remixed music too, which actually sounds pretty good. I might have to replay them all sometime with that on.

Thought they all had difficulty options, at least the nes ones. Think easy gives uou a triple shot, and also certain changes. For example, on original mode there is a laser obstacle that kills you in one hit, but on easy it only takes half your health

Having recently played through, I can answer that.

The difficulty setting through the Options affects all of the games but MM8 and Power Fighters 1 & 2, but it does so in slightly different ways, depending on the game. Note that for Mega Man 2, the gameis in *Difficult* mode all the time. This means no one-hit kills. (Metal Man w/ Metal Blade)

Navi mode was fun too, if only for all the terrible Engrish, but some decent tips along the way. "Hit him with his weakness weapon!"

So do you know any specifics? Really curious about all this. In general I think either way it's easy to say the games get increasingly easy as they went regardless though.

But yeah I think I must have grown up playing MM2 on Normal all the time or something, because I remember the buster doing insane damage to all bosses... not the case this time around, and the boss rush + Wily fight at the very end was brutal (and man I hate Air Man). MM1 was pretty tough at times too, and then MM3 felt bit harder than usual here and there as well, mostly with the bosses. But then the Wily stages were pretty dang easy in MM3 and you get loaded with E-Tanks, which actually save unlike MM1/MM2 if you quit. It kind of feels like there's more enemies around the stages too, but maybe not?

I didn't see anything too unusual except for no 1 hit kill on Metal Man in MM2. No extra enemies or anything. I think the difficulty differences we might be noticing are our skills getting rusty on those old games, at least that's how I felt going through the final part of MM4 & 5

To quote Mega Man Home Page:
The difficulty setting (in the Options) affects all of the games (except for 8 and the arcades), but it does so in slightly different ways, depending on the game. Note that for Mega Man 2, the game acts as if it is in “Difficult” mode all the time. This means no one-hit kills, sorry. (On the other hand, in Mega Man 7 just look at how much damage your weapon shots do to Robot Masters in easy mode—yeesh!) If you are playing in easy mode, the damage data listed on the various Data Base pages will not apply. However, it should be accurate for the normal setting, although I haven’t tested this. Just remember that Mega Man 2 is on difficult mode, so halve all of the Mega Man 2 values.
