Achtung repro makers: Roms stripped of gaudy intro available

Post by kamiboy »

I know the teams who have made these translation patches just want a bit of recognition for their work. But they could have been classy and introduced their names in a seamless way that shows respect for the source material instead of a gaudy and intrusive splash screen that you are forced to see whenever you boot up the game.

For mere ROM/Emulator combos that is fine, but when you are making a physical cart costing you as much as retail that sort of grafitti is unacceptable. So I went ahead and modified the worst offenders to remove various ugly splash screens or garish logos such as that painful to look at tomato rubbish in Bahamut Lagoon.

Good riddance. These mods were made for my own personal use but I cant be the only one who wanted to punch the screen everytime they boot up certain translated titles, so if interested PM me with you E-mail and I'll forward a zip with following purified ROMS:

Alcahest
Bahamoot Dragoon
Front Mission
Mystic Ark

If there are any other offenders you think needs to be modded for classier cart productions let me know and I'll take a stab at the ROM.

Actually I do not mind those because of all the hard work that went into hacking those game but one that badly need this is Emeral Dragon as the intro is bugged when put on a real pcb and you have to sit through a 45 sec black screen with weird music before being able to skip to the game (which work fine after that)

But other than instance where it actually create issue I feel it would be best not to distribute those intro less rom. Those patch get released for free and take thousand of hours hard work to create, so looking at a logo or intro for 10 sec is a really small price to pay in return.

You don´t understand, this is specifically for repro carts.
I´m with Kamiboy. Great job. Indeed, the recognition should´ve been classier.

Sure like with the Final Fantasy III NES translation I popped onto EPROMs not too long ago. Or a bit of something on the title/save screen.

Thing is stripping out their credits entirely is a no-no in my mind. If you can't do better you shouldn't strip it out. Not like reproduction creation is all that difficult by comparison to translations and hacking.

Face it, you make money (or simply enjoy) off someone else's work. Give credit where it is due even if it means you spend all of 5 seconds looking at a screen per boot.

It is their work not yours.

This ^.

I don't want to sound harsh but just play and enjoy the game, I don't like this topic.

My opinion probably doesn't count for much but I can think of a fair trade: Put the credits on the label of the repro cart. (And if you make them; the box/manual.)

That kind of graffiti is acceptable. The fan translation, as a whole, is graffiti!

Someone spent thousands of hours making that ROM (for you) and all they wanted was to put their name on it. You should only remove it if it causes problems on real hardware.

Meh, I don't see the big deal in stripping the credits, so long as they're always properly credited. That's a huge deal for purists.

For most of them, I don't care. But the Emerald Dragon one messes up a repro cart and causes you to wait a minute before being able to play while listening to some music.

But for personal use, I dont see the issue in someone removing that.

I took a look at removing the intro from Emerald Dragon, unfortunately the tool I use to do the stripping does not work for ROMs bigger than a certain size which complicates things.

I'll look into it some more when I have some time.
