Wii U freezing/unresponsive!

Post by jay_red »

I got a freeze yesterday while playing Zombi U, it was on a loading screen and nothing I did would get the Wii u to respond, I had to pull the plug on the back to get it to reset. I thought it was maybe a one off thing, and with the game its self.

Fast forward to tonight, and my wife is playing Nintendo Land. She is playing the Zelda mini game, and got a random freeze that not only rendered the console/pad useless, but the music stuck on one note. Once again had to pull the plug, but this time it wouldnt put anything to the TV, and the pad said it could not connect with the console. On the third try, after taking out the disc it came back.

Not 15 minutes later the same thing happened, only this time I could not get the console to come back at all. You could turn it on with the game pad, but you would get a message that said it could not connect. It also did not output any video. I unplugged it for a few minutes and same thing, starting to panic I tried one more time and it came back.

I did a quick search online and this seems to be a not so rare problem, and is really worrying me. Not only does the freezing happen at random, but the fact that you can not get the console back immediately is a huge concern. I will be contacting Nintendo tomorrow, what sucks is that while they may fix the issue, I will be without the console for some time if I have to send it back in. This really sucks! Anyone else have a similar issue?

Edit: not so isolated issue:

I've had this happen to me once, I've had systems freeze before but the loud beep from being froze on one note was super scary.

I think it is a System software issue. When I reset my console by pulling the plug and turning it back on my entire plaza was different and finally had a mess of miis from MiiVerse. I think the system was trying to pull in too much data for MiiVerse integration in Nintendo Land and for general system use and freaked out. Hopefully I'm right and a system update is on the way.

that sucks, man. a new console should not brick in the first 48 hours or so. :(

Hope you get it sorted without much delay.

I had the same Freezing issue last night in NintendoLand. It was at a seemingly random spot in the Pikmin mini game. Thankfully this has only happened once, so far everything else has worked normally.

I'm kinda glad this thread showed up, I wondered if anyone else has had this problem...

Haven't had any issues with my WiiU *knock-on-wood*

Edit: EXCEPT it does seem to occasionally be unable to read the disc in the drive. Had it happen once with ZombiU and once with BlackOps. Had it happen the first day though. Nothing yesterday.

That's when mine happened, second stage of the Pikmin game.

Nintendo are aware of the freezing issues. Hopefully we can expect a patch in the near future.

I had to unplug the power cord from my Wii U thrice (which made me cringe) to reset after some Miimaker menu looping. I couldn't power down with Gamepad or the power button on the Wii. I read on a forum that SD cards and USB devices are conflicting with loading. I'm thinking....yeah ok. I pop out my SD card - voila, no more freezing. Weirdness.

Mine randomly froze once on the Menu Screen. It actually froze on, meaning I was attempting to shut it off at the time, and the controller shut off, but the console didn't. I had to unplug it and its worked fine since. Hasn't messed up in a game yet.

As for me, my first unit emitted a high pitch whine when I first turned it on (sounded like an unbalanced system fan), and it refused to display anything on screen. 10 power cycles later, I gave up and took it back to Best Buy and got another unit. My wife and I noticed that the second unit had more packaging tape on the unit's wrapper than my first one, which led me to believe that someone returned the first one previously to Best Buy.

I hope this launch doesn't face the dreaded 'launch model' issues that every company seems to face :(
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?
