Will Final Fantasy XIV be properly reborn?

Post by J T »

It's a rare moment that someone admits they were wrong. Square Enix released Final Fantasy XIV awhile back, but then publically retracted after some nasty reviews and said "We're sorry. We'll take it back and make it better." And so now Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is their attempt at apology. Will it be any good?

I don't care for MMOs, so I'm not sure I'll like it regardless, but I'm really quite impressed to see a company really make an effort to learn from their mistakes and repolish a game to please their fans.

It has a shot at being decent, if not good. Whether or not it'll actually be a commercial success is another matter.

There is at least a good bit of humility on SE's part, which is a lot better than the earlier years of FFXI.

Still, having playing XI for as long as I have (though my accounts are inactive right now  ) it would take a Christmas miracle for me not to harbor a fair amount of cynicism towards the company with regard to MMO development.

Obviously, they do want the thing to succeed, but I kinda wonder how much of this is an attempt to salvage sunk costs and/or the Final Fantasy brand moreso than really listening to consumers.

I'd pretty much written off MMOs due to the timesink and lack of gameplay innovation, but wow, that trailer really impressed. Gonna keep an eye on this to see if the game holds up.
