Need some GB/GBC reccomendations

Post by The Nihilist »

I believe some back story is required.

I have an 8 year old nephew that I am intending on getting a Game Boy Color (reason why GBC is because it is, literally, the only red Gameboy in Las Vegas). They have to fix the speaker on it, but besides that it's good)

I know he likes Star Wars. But I'm not sure what kind of game genre completely appeals to him. I'm not really sure he knows either as his parents have a bunch of consoles with nothing appropriate for an 8 year old; that or they have sports games (I know he's not into sports, much to the disbelief and denial of his parents) and all he has for DS is Star Wars; which is fine, except it leaves nothing for the imagination as far as genre expansion goes.

I've found a copy of Star Wars for GB in town, but then had the immediate thought of 'this game COULD need a battery' and I left without getting it to do research on what games out there required a battery. I don't want to get a game that could potentially save for a month and then die out; especially since I don't trust his parents to go out of their way to get a battery replacement.

So I'm trying to find some great games for an 8 year old that don't require a battery. You know the drill: if it's fun and engaging, it's a go. The ultimate goal is to get him hooked on retro gaming
I'm coming up short on ideas because I'm getting back into the swing of building a GB/GBC collection myself and the amount of games I have played could be considered 'pitiful'.

So far it seems like a lot of the greats require a battery save. You know, because gaming God hates me.

I know I want to get him Kirby's Tilt N Tumble because of the battery-less EPROM save feature and the novelty of the game itself.

Is there a 'gateway' GB/GBC game out there, lol.

I recommend Megaman II for the Gameboy. It's got solid production values, is pretty easy, and a lot of fun. Failing that, the original Kirby's Dreamland is pretty awesome. Both are affordable and easy to find.

Super Mario Land is also excellent. Also look into some of the Ninja Turtles games for the system. Sadly, a lot of the best Gameboy games really did need batteries.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

By the way, where in town are you shopping?

If you haven't yet, be sure to drop by A Gamer's Paradise (next to the Pinball Hall of Fame), and Wii Play Games (Nellis and.. DI I think?). Both have a strong selection and reasonable prices.

Gamers Paradise on Nellis near Lake Mead.

Only other place I have been to is Gameworld on Charleston. Then have a good selection of games, but A LOT of what they have looks ratty and the stickers on all of them are pretty damn tattered. On top of being overpriced (notable example $250 for Shantae--'boxed', not in original plastic, missing a couple things and the box is dinged to hell).

I've been to the one by the Pinball Hall of Fame once before I left for Afghanistan, but it's way the hell of of the way for me. But it sounds like I need to give them another go.

And there's another place that's way out like 215 and Lake Mead I think. Right by a Capriottis. Good selection of stuff, I just didn't find any games I wanted--again, before I left for Afghanistan.

There are a bunch of Bomberman games, perhaps one of those or Mole Mania for some puzzle action. Don't forget there are people that can replace batteries for you.

For an 8-year-old, I would recommend Kirby's Dream Land, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Super Mario Land 2, and any of the original Pokemon games. That should be enought to get him hooked...

Everything there except Kirby uses a battery, but they're good recommendations. I'd also toss in Donkey Kong '94 if we're going with stuff that uses battery saves.

Honestly, OP, I wouldn't worry too much about dead batteries in anything besides Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal. Yes it's possible that you could end up with one that has a dead battery, but it's reasonably unlikely.

Maybe try and test the games you buy out before hand? Carry a game boy with you when you go shopping?

Yeah. The reason why the Pokemon games' batteries run dry is because they're real time clocks that ALWAYS draw power. standard sram saves draw far less and last far far longer.

No backstory was required.

Replace the batteries for him preemptively. That also gives you a chance to clean the contacts up on the PCB. Give him:

Tetris DX
Link's Awakening DX
Pokemon Gold
Super Mario Bros Deluxe
