Adventure Time discussion.

Post by indecks »

Ok, first of all I know we have a western animation thread but this thread isn't really meant to be a thread about AT being western animation. This is more about Adventure Time itself - specifically it's storyline, that happens to be a little bit interesting. I understand if the mods prefer this to be merged w the Western Ani thread, but hopefully it will stand on it's own.

At any rate:

Fans of the show might already know this but for those of you that are casual AT watchers, maybe you hadn't picked up on it. Adventure Time is about a kid named Finn and his talking dog Jake, who has magical stretchy powers. I think the show started as a simple oddball show kinda like Regular Show and Flapjack, but it seems to have A. evolved into something more or B. It's creator had this planned out from the beginning.

The world the characters live in is called Ooo. But as the show has gone on, episodes have very subtly elaborated on the Land of Ooo. Finn seems to be the last surviving Human, and you can see several human skeletons throughout the world/show. Also, at one point the entire planet where Ooo is is shown and it is very similar to the Earth, with a huge chunk of it missing. There are references to a great war called (within the show) The Great Mushroom War. In other episodes you can see ruins of cities all over the place, as well as other hints of past civilizations as well as unexploded nuclear bombs here and there (especially in the intro.)

Things sorta started coming together in an episode called "Holly Jolly Secrets." The villain Ice King had some VHS tapes of himself back before the war and the episode states that the Ice King was just a normal archaeologist named Simon who bought a crown from someone, and upon wearing it - it drove him mad. Since then, more and more hints of things being connected have been revealed very subtly or very indistinctly. The latest episode "I Remember You" delves a little further into the Ice King's past, as well as another character's past - Marceline.

There's tons of hidden stuff in the show about it's background and it's kind of a fun scavenger hunt to find stuff like this. I'd compare it to getting the full story on Half Life 2. It's not told in cinematics for the most part. It's told in newspaper clippings, or things in the background, etc. I don't know if the comics reveal anything about the show's back story but I might consider picking them up if they do.

Anyway, is anyone else into this show?

For some reason the existing thread on Adventure Time is in General Gaming.

But yeah, I'm a big fan. And I'm not gonna lie, I've been listening to the last song from "I Remember You" on repeat for the past couple days.
There's just so much the show does right. It manages to be totally goofy and ridiculous, but also actually builds upon itself and engages in real character development. And there's something to like about all the characters. I like that BMO speaks with an Asain accent, I like that there are a ton of ridiculous princesses, I like little things like how Marceline the vampire wears a giant hat and long gloves to go outside in the sun, I like how crazy the Ice King is, I like how "sassy" (for lack of a better word) Lumpy Space Princess is, and I like little details like how Finn & Jake have a pile of old Macintosh computers with melted candlesticks on top. There's just so much great stuff about the show. Honestly, Finn is my least favorite character, but that doesn't prevent me from being a crazy fan!

I want the whole series to come out on Blu-Ray so I can watch it endlessly!

Oh and I really like how the comics are written by Ryan North, who also makes my favorite webcomic. And the Marceline & the Scream Queens mini-series is by the creator of Octopus Pie, another great webcomic. I love seeing talented people from the internet doing things that are mainstream outside the web.

Not long ago, I would have said that overall Regular Show is more my style, but the past couple episodes have been really weak. Thomas just makes me think of "Itchy & Scratchy & Pootchie."

Yeah that song was pretty cool. I prefer the one called "Nuts" from that episode tho. That's the one that Marceline sings as she's sitting in front of the fridge. Both those songs are by a girl named Rebecca Sugar or something like that.

Im hoping more of the story will be revealed. I love stuff like that.
