I was just thinking.... Do hackable consoles sell better?
If you look at the case of the XBox versus the Gamecube, do you think there was an influence there? Do you think that the fact that people can hack, mod, and play copied games on the XBox significantly helped the XBox in sales?
Even people who do have a modded XBox probably buy retail games for the system.
But that fact that they can mod it helps in the decision (to some people) in which system to buy.
Once the system is in their possesion, they may go out and buy games for it.
On the other hand, the Dreamcast was very easy to play backups on (but most people didn't know about the fact until the console was already on the way out).
Does this make sense?
What do you all think?
Easy-to-hack systems sell better?
As much as I dislike it, I think Conn is correct. Many gamers are ignorant people who think Nintendo just makes "kiddy games"! The Gamecube itself was cheaper and the games for it are cheaper as well.Conn wrote:I think the Xbox sold well because it was aimed at 18+ year olds and had mature games (and Halo). Nothing to do with the hackability.
I mean, the Xbox is only just barely beating the Gamecube in NA (it might be losing to it now due to the 360), and losing to it everywhere else.
In terms of DS versus PSP, as well, although the DS is ahead (With merit, IMO), many gamers disregard it compared to the PSP because they only seem to care for the "mature" games that Sony provides.
I was walking along about one week ago, in the aftermath of E3, and overheard 3 late teens guys discussing the next-gen, and they were dissing the Nintendo for only having games for kids. One has to pity gamers that miss out on e.g. Mario simply because there's no blood n' gore, swearing and nudity like in say, a GTA game.
People: These are games. You're supposed to have fun, not to be ashamed of playing something just because your younger cousin/brother/whatever can play it too... As long as it's good, play it!
