I have been having issues with component on my switch, so I have decided to "downgrade" my component cables on my ps2 to s-video.
Considering my TV is only 480i capable, do you think I will notice a significant or even noticeable loss in quality by going from component to s-video?
I believe I saw an example where a CRT in 480i actually looked better with S-video than it did with component. However when the ps2 was set to 480p the component was the clear winner.
Thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a very, very, small decrease in quality. If you're not running in 480p then it shouldn't be much of a worry to you.

I have ordered my S-Video cable and will do a comparison
From the looks of it, he actually preferred s-video...

Isn't your issue ONLY with Sega Genesis based hardware? I suppose no loss checking svideo out anyway.
Lum fan.

I have my genesis going through component. So genesis ->Scart -> Componenttheclaw wrote:Isn't your issue ONLY with Sega Genesis based hardware? I suppose no loss checking svideo out anyway.
It's easier to get component on genesis then to mod it to have svideo. Otherwise I would be running genesis through svideo and ps2 via component.

I have tested the same setup on my Sony Wega 32" CRT. Unless you are doing direct A/B comparisons between component and s-video, you won't notice at all.

This is interesting, I know older Trinitrons with Component do not display in 480p, but 480i. However, there are some tubes that are EDTV which can go only up to 480p but enough to make a difference in a progressive scan game. I am curious of a side by side screenshot of a PS2 480p enabled game in Component and the same game in SVideo 480i. Would the 480p games even work in the SD Tube if progressive is enabled? If not, how do they look in Component 480i compared to SVideo?treepop wrote:Considering my TV is only 480i capable, do you think I will notice a significant or even noticeable loss in quality by going from component to s-video?

Is your WEGA a regular tube, ED or an HD? I have the HD version and there is a definite improvement pulling PS2 games that support the 480p mode. The trick is enabling the 480p mode, most require holding a button combo during a game load such as Triangle and X.Zing wrote:I have tested the same setup on my Sony Wega 32" CRT. I have a similar question i have an hdcrt thats supposedly 1080i but the best input on it is component. So is the best image i could get 480p? If so whats the point of it being 1080i (i got the tv for free btw)

Most likely you can get 1080i. The reason you can't do 720p is the TV isn't fast enough to scan that many lines at once. Because 1080i is interlaced, it actually scans less vertical lines than a progressive 720 signal. So your best progressive is 480p, but you can also use 1080i natively just fine.ninjainspandex wrote:I have a similar question i have an hdcrt thats supposedly 1080i but the best input on it is component. (At least that was my experience with the CRT I sold to CFFJR)

Model Number? There should be a DVI input easily accommodated by a HDMI to DVI cable. You will need to use the analog audio RCA stereo jacks though.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Most likely you can get 1080i. The HD WEGA supports 720p just fine and there is no delay in screen draw. If a 4:3 HD Tube, anything above 480p will result in black bars on top and bottom since it then reverts to widescreen mode. Some Cable TV, DVD, Bluray and Digital Boxes can "anamorphic" the screen to reduce to black bars. To get an idea of the imagery, try either PS2 Gran Turismo 4 or PS2 Tourist Trophy in 480p and then again at 720p. These two NTSC PS2 games can go all the way to 1080i right out of the box.
