Hi everyone,
I have an original model 1001 psx and the console is taking a long time to load and sometimes says disc read error. Is my psx dying? I also bought a s video cable for the playstation and I just wanted to know if the s video componet better than using the red/yellow/white cables in the back. Since I have a psone should I bother with the psx and try to fix it or don't even bother. Thanks
Is my model 1001 psx dying? s video better than r/w/y?

Assuming the discs are in good shape and the laser is clean, then yes, it's dying. You might get more out of it if you play it upside down. That helps, somehow. If you want to fix it you can get a replacement from another 1001, but then you might as well get a new console.
I'd just use the psone. It's stable and might have slightly better loading, especially if it wasn't used much. Older revisions are less reliable. I'm surprised yours still works!
S-video is definitely worth it.

Composite (yellow plug) is 1 video signal. S-video sends two signals, color (chroma) and brightness (luma). The less mixing of signals that are sent, the less 'muddy' it gets.

Original PlayStations are incredibly easy to find, thankfully.
Last time I stopped by Goodwill there were FIVE on the shelves.
My local CD shop always has them in stock - $8 each.
Mine seems to still work fine, but doesn't get much use (I use my PS2 to play PS1 games).

Yup, I agree. Theres lots of PS1's out there.
I saw about four or five stacked up at a fleamarket sellers spot.
And I just got a PSone the other day too.
I think I have five of them now.
Lots of different models to choose from as well as the PSone.

plain ps1's are worthless. repair parts and effort barely worth it.
unless you have a modded, import, or other version whose replacement will cost more.
rgb is the highest end ps1 video type. all models allow that. except most american tvs need some kind of converter box...
ps1 consoles don't support ypbpr component added by ps2.
