FTL: Faster Than Light

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

Well this is a little gem of a game that came out today now isn't it?

For those who don't know, it's a rogue-like in space with an awesome soundtrack and graphics, and includes all sorts of nerdgasm inducing gameplay elements. I may do a video walkthrough once I unlock and understand it a bit more, but, for now, you can watch TotalBiscuit play it.

First try I made it about halfway through the game somehow then got completely destroyed because I ran out of missiles and at some point I thought it was a good idea to sell my energy weapons.

Pardon the minor necro-reply but I would really be interested in impressions of this game from fellow forumites.

I've made it to the last boss a couple times but every time I haven't properly equipped myself for the fight. I've got the Engi ship unlocked (make it to sector 5) and the alternate layouts for both the Kestrel and the Engi. I'm slowly figuring out what weapons work best and what don't, what upgrades to get and when.

I tend to favor defensive builds and shield ignoring weapons and projectiles. Typically like to have hull beams especially, and some form of missile to take shields and weapons down. I've made it to the end boss but as with you, have never been quite well equipped enough. I'm starting to realize the necessity of staying in a sector to the last possible jump. At first I considered upgrading the engine systems useless but it's actually really handy. As is autopilot if you're short on crew.

Definitely like the Kestrel even though the Engi ship is probably better for the builds I like.

I've found multi-hitting lasers is where it's at. The first time I made it to the end I had done most of the game with a 3-shot, 1-damage laser and a 2-shot, 2-damage laser, but switched the 2/2 for a 2-damage beam weapon. The problem was I couldn't get through any damage, as I had to land all three shots and then the beam would pierce for 1. I also had a cloak but found it lacking. I'd rather have spent that 150 scrap on another weapon (probably a missile).

Wow, I just saw this and it looks ridiculously fun. I'm actually probably going to buy it today.

I have been playing this for a week or so now off and on. It's a great game, and is certainly holding me over untill the xcom reboot is released next week. i love how it's really captures the idea of being a starship commander, being able to revert power to other parts of the ship and what not.

So last night I finally beat the final boss on easy. Now my goals are to unlock all the ships and beat it on normal. Boarding crews are insane, and I recommend nabbing a crew teleporter ASAP.

I've been managing to consistently get around the 5th sector (still using the Engi ship), but once the enemies start getting level 3 shields it becomes ludicrously hard (especially for the Engi ship which relies heavily on the dinky ion cannon). I think I'm going to start focusing on unlocking more ships as well, hopefully I can find something with a little better offensive focus.
