Not surprising in the least, but sad nonetheless. There's far too much focus on online gaming these days IMO. I wish online and singleplayer games could be completely separate; that way each would have undivided focus during development.

I hope they're like Valve, and it doesn't mean they're done with single player only stories entirely, and just means that their games will at least have social elements.

I really can't understand why it's so hard to see that some genres are good for multiplayer and others are good for single player. I know I don't want to play with other people all the time.

It's not what works best, it's what makes more money. Why did Capcom port Megaman X to the iphone? Did anyone really think that would work? Activision has told Blizzard not to invest in games like Starcraft again because they only pay once (when the players buy them) and not monthly like WoW. Simply put, multiplayer games give them the opportunity to sell more DLC. Mind you, companies will all try to copy this model and fail, but unfortunately investors won't listen to the voice of reason.
Valve on the other hand will probably do it properly (like Portal 2 for example).

The first three Ratchet & Clank games were some of the best games made for the PS2. So damn fun with excellent single player play. Hopefully this doesn't mean they will be abandoning the franchise any time soon...
