Set up questions

Post by vlame »

So, in my first apartment I have a pretty nice set up. 2 cubeical cabinets stacked.

Image
Image messy wires! :[ *i know the justifiers wont work with the lcd, i just don't have anywhere to put them for now and those baskets are hiding about 4 controllers for each system lol.

on the left you can see a 32 inch TV (it has svideo x2, hdmi x2 and component x2) i am using 2 s-video switch boxes (1 of them converts composite to s-video - * AV Famicom) so everything will be connected to atleast s-video. no dreamcast here because this tv doesn't have VGA, its in the bedroom connected to the desk TV.

I was wondering if anyone has used something like this? power strip liberators and if they worked well.

I also wanted to get my xbox to stream files from my pc, either wired or wirelessly. I think i need a crossover cable (can the xbox crossover and stream from a ubuntu pc?) or a wireless bridge. anybody have exp using one of those set ups?

im guessing the official xbox1 component breakout box gives the best results, so i'll probably buy that one.
and any idea how to fix an s-video cable (madcatz multi) that acts finicky?

Power strip liberators are nothing more than short extension cords. Why wouldn't they work? I don't understand your question.

1. Are you using the liberators because some transformer plugs does not fit? Cheaper to just add a second power strip and plug it into the surge suppressor. Not every plug has to be used.

2. When I dump PS2 DVD9 discs as ISOs from the PC directly to the PS2 hard drive, I use a crossover ethernet cable. Your XBox would need the same type of ethernet cable for the direct connect from the PC.

3. See if the connector at the console is clean. Usually a cable fails right near the end from repeated plugging or a SVideo pin in the plug might have broke. You could cut the end off and solder in a new plug, maybe cheaper to buy another cable.

Daisy-chaining power strips/surge protectors is generally not an advisable thing to do...

1. Yes, they work well, but shop around you can get them for alot cheaper. I use them often but the ones I have are nonamed.

2. If it is a direct connection from pc to xbox I believe you have to have a crossover. If you are going through a router I believe you can use a standard cable. I use wireless bridges occasionally, they are a pain to step up, but once they work they work well. My friends who do this run tversity so they can play most any video they own on their xbox. Sadly it does not work with the 3ds...

I wouldnt have a workshop desk without one. They are stupidly useful - though mine is 8 plugs, not 24...

I know that they're typically installed on workbenches, I just imagine that they'd also be very useful for anyone with a large console collection they want to keep plugged in. Probably a lot safer and cleaner than multiple surge protectors, etc too.

Read the last line in my quote. When you think about it, one powerstip alone is not a good idea for a wall socket outlet either, the reason why there is a built in circuit breaker. As long as the total power consumption does not exceed 15 amps. It does not matter if all the consoles are plugged into the power strip(s) since all are not turned on.

They work so well that Sega released an official one back in the day:

Edit:
I am aware that it is more of a surge protector than a power strip, but it is spaced out like a powerstrip.
