Please help - need to find the name of an old shmup!

Post by Kafkatuyen »

I'm trying very hard to find the name of a particular shmup from my childhood. I'd really like to play it again as I've recently got back into this genre with Cave's amazing games. I can give you quite a lot a clues, and I'd really appreciate even any attempts at naming it, even if you are way off. I'll look up whatever people post.
So the game I played was a stage 1 demo of the main game.
It came as a freeware or shareware game on an old mac magazine demo disc. Macworld comes to mind, but not certain.
The game graphically looked similar to what I have seen of Raptor, or Tyrian. Detailed sprites for the time.
The game was likely set on mars or I at least remember very red landscapes. The ship was spaceship like rather than 1945 planes, for example.
The time frame for the demo had to be around or before 2000.
The BEST clue I can give is that unlike Tyrian or raptor this game had a small red target marker in front of the ship that showed where your bomb would land. So it had land enemies and falling bombs to deal with them.
The game was definitely vertical scrolling, and I don't remember it really having much of a bullet hell element.

If any of these clues ring a bell for you, or if you think I am wrong and it is Tyrian or raptor please reply. Even if you just have a suggestion where to look or a list of titles.

Cheers

Since it came on a magazine disc, its got to be a demo or shareware of sorts. The game really sounds like Raptor, there was a Macintosh version as well as PC. Very good SHMUP without the overkill of bullet hell.

The game to get DOS Box installed on a newer PC.

It might be helpful if you could tell us what Mac hardware and OS you played it on...

Was it Deimos Rising?

It's a Mac shmup from 2001, one of the only Mac shmups I know of, and it sounds an awful lot like what you described.

It's the sequel to a 1998 game called Mars Rising which it also might be (pictured below). Actually I'm almost certain it's Mars Rising after reading your description again. Red targeting reticle and everything.

Thats amazing! Mars Rising is the game! that screenshot brings back so many old memories! This morning i spent hours trawling the internet and found only really close-looking games like raptor, and now i have the game and it has a sequel too! Diemos rising doesn't look quite as good though me'thinks.

Anyways thank you very much to Gunstar Green (amazing) and to dsheinem. also Crtgamer.

I'm going to see if i can download Mars Rising tonight!
