Is there any reason to own an HD DVD player?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Is there any reason to own an HD DVD player?

Post by BoringSupreez »

Despite it's age, there are still people who buy laserdiscs because there are certain things which are best on it (Star Wars, for example). I'm wondering if there's anything on HD DVD that isn't on Blu-Ray, or if HD DVD is a completely pointless format now.

There are technically a couple exclusives, but IMO it's not worth really seeking out. I find laserdiscs appealing partly from their retro nature. It's fun to find old things that aren't on DVD, HD-DVD titles might not be available on Blu-Ray, but I'm sure they're all on DVD - which isn't a bad format.
But if you find an HD-DVD player at a garage sale, you might as well grab it?

Here's an out-of-date list of exclusives.

Only if you are a collector.

Or as Dish would probably post....

"No".

Pretty much anything that HD DVD exclusive right now will probably make its way to blu ray in some form in the future.

So no, there isn't any reason to own an HD DVD player.

Another "no" vote. Definitely seems pointless compared to LD and whatnot.

If you find a cheap player and a bunch of super cheap clearance (or free as people dump them) movies it might be worthwhile even if you just watch the movies and then unload them. But unless you're specifically going to watch stuff or have it just for the collection, probably not.

My father use to own a HD DVD player and Blu-Ray player and really... most HD DVD's are now on Blu-Ray or if they aren't then they are on DVD. We have already replaced all of our HD DVD's onto Blu-Ray or if we didn't then we have them on DVD. I would say no also even if you find it at a Yard Sale because it just not worth it, plus unlike Beta and VHS. Blu-Ray is better then HD DVD. More so since Blu-Ray's are now including the DVD copies.

I vote yes, but only if it is the 360 HD DVD drive. Because it is a great portable DVD drive. Which is what Ive been using for a couple years.

I have an Xbox360 HDDVD drive as well. Two of them, actually. One I have still in the box as a backup. I figure the 10 or so movies I have on HDDVD are still HD, and look great, so why rebuy them. I have the first 4 Harry Potters, Hot Rod, Transformers, etc. No need to rebuy them. Oh, I also have the special edition of Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise.

I don't see a reason to go out looking for a set, no. But if you find them fairly cheap, why not?
