Discworld, other good console adventure games?

Post by kelsoanim »

I've been reading some Discworld books and it's gotten me interested in checking out the adventure game that came out in the 90s. I've been leaning towards the PS 1 version because I prefer playing games on console and I like collecting PlayStation games. Is the PS1 version of the game any good?

I've played a few adventure games on consoles including one of the Strongbad's games on Wii and the Back to the Future game on PS3. What are other good console adventure games? Older 8, 16 and 32bit games would be best to get that classic adventure game feel. I'm open to newer games too though. Are there any good ports of the Lucas Arts or various "Quest" games?

I think adventure games should always be played with a mouse (I know the PS1 has one, but at that point, you might as well just play it on the PC).

Broken Sword and its sequel both had PS1 releases and stand up against Lucasarts and Sierra as the best Adventure games.

If you're just wanting to play them on a console as opposed to being more specifically interested in ports, ScummVM has ports for a number of game consoles, along with computers, phones, and whatnot. It can play quite a lot of older adventure titles.
They also have a few older abandonware or released as free titles too.

Relatively few adventure games were released for consoles outside of Japan. There is an NES port of King's Quest V, offhand, but I don't think it'd be considered good.
The Sega CD has a few - Rise of the Dragon and Willy Beamish are very common titles for it. The Jurassic Park game on it is a point and click adventure too. Snatcher mostly is, Dune partly is, there's a port of Monkey Island, etc.

In more recent years, the DS has gotten a lot of more unique/exclusive adventure games, some on the Wii as well. Dreamfall was released on the XBox, Syberia and Syberia II on the PS2 and XBox.

IMO, if you're looking at the genre as a whole, the main consoles to consider are the DS and Wii - the vast majority of the rest are PC-first titles, outside of the rare item like Snatcher.

Decided to go with Scumm on Wii for now. I'm playing Beneath a Steel Sky at the moment, fun stuff. Probably going to buy some Lucas Arts games eventually. I'm also itching to play a Space Quest game again one of these days. Can you play games purchased on Steam or GoG in ScrummVM? I'm trying to stay more legit these days with PC games, it's too easy to just Torent stuff.

I'm pretty sure there's a Sega Master System port of the original King's Quest. It might have been a Europe-only release, but should still be playable on an American console.

You might also want to get D for PS1. It's a game with some flaws, but is also pretty interesting and was pretty outside-the-norm for when it came out.

AFAIK, GoG utilizes ScummVM for at least some of the games it sells (or offers for free, as in the case of Beneath a Steel Sky).

Steam, from some quick looking around seems like you can. They're just digital versions of the boxed collections, which used now-old version of DOSBox to run the original data files. Getting more up to date versions of DOSBox seems like it takes a little work/external patching, but provided ScummVM supports the game I think it should work. I haven't personally tried it (though I could, I suppose).

It's also on Saturn and 3DO. Be sure to check out it's Saturn-exclusive psuedo-sequel, Enemy Zero. The best way to describe it would be a horror FPS adventure FMV exstravaganza.
I'm suprised nobody mentioned Nightshade on NES. The interface is somewhat clunky, but it's one of the most hilarious games ever.
Insert clever quote here.

D? Why I never! D2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>> D, even though it's a different genre altogether. Enemy Zero, you try, forget D!

The Japanese Saturn port of Darkseed is pretty cheap and awesome but while the voices are in english... the text is in Japanese so it's not that import friendly.

I recommend you this games too:

Red Johnson's Chronicles (It's a cyberpunk adventure with a very... titilating title) - PS3/360 in a few days
Back To The Future: The Game - PS3/I think the Wii too
Strong Bad - PS3/Wii
Sam & Max series - PS3/360/Wii
Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis - Wii (It's an unlockable in Indiana Jones and The Staff Of Kings)
Sherlock Holmes Vs. Jack The Ripper - 360
The Walking Dead - PS3/360
Gray Matter - 360 (Only in Europe)

I'm not a fan of Enemy Zero on the Saturn or D (I hated D) but I can recommend D2 a lot. It's pretty crazy and awesome.
