Neo Geo & Capcom ( Most likely SF & KOF ) theory

Post by AdamGomez1987 »

I remember I was talking to a friend about why I enjoyed capcom games over neo geo, they always played much smoother in the console versions where neo geo games were really badly ported and choppy to me.

One thing we brought up was X-Men vs Street Fighter and my friend told me "if it wasn't for Neo Geo and the King of Fighters games having teams and crossovers, X-Men vs Street Fighter or other crossover games wouldn't have existed." For any experts, I was wondering what you guys think, I believe I have read something about somebody moving out of Capcom from the original Street Fighter game to work on the first King of Fighters. Was King of Fighters in Street Fighter's shadow or Capcom & Neo Geo for that matter?

The crossover concept originally came from SNK's desire to pit their popular Fatal Fury series with Art of Fighting flagship. Initially conceived as a BeatEmUp, they then went about turning it into a team based fighter with additional crossovers from other SNK properties (Ikari, Psycho Soldier etc.) alongside newly created personalities like Kyo and Benimaru. it goes without saying that their concept paid off well for SNK as KoF is the premiere product for them even today. What Capcom can take major credit for though is popularizing the Tag Based structure (I'm aware Kizuna Encounter from SNK which was released in 96 as well) that X-Men Vs SF provided as well as a crossover concept from two distinctly different types of media.
What you are referring to is "Piston Takashi" who left Capcom (after helping develop the original Street Fighter) to head SNK in their development in Garodensetsu (Fatal Fury: King Of Fighters). According to Mr. Takashi, Fatal Fury and it's concepts are what he intially envisioned for the original Street Fighter. He left for SNK due to the freedom he was given in the development of his games, something he apparently wasn't given at Capcom.

I don't think any of these companies products are in the shadow of the other. They appeal to completely different tastes. KoF has significant international appeal over SF. Also bear in mind that these fighters share alot of the talented staff that helped create the other. They will often share artists, programmers and game designers. This applies across countless fighting properties. Tekken's orginal fighting designer came from Virtua Fighter and I even believe Last Blade creation was led by a young Daisuke Ishiwatari who then went on to create Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. Heck, the design team for original GG was named "Neo Blood"!

Hope this helps.

Helps alot, thanks very much. I always enjoyed fighting games, heck I remember enjoying Samurai Warriors in particular but I never got too involved in it because it was always the 50 cent game ( I was always playing the 25 cent games at the time, 50 cents was considered way too much ) And to my opinion, the SNK games never ported right for the Genesis & SNES where Capcom games did. Heck, I was told that even the Neo Geo console and those expensive $100 CD's did a decent port, heck of a lot better than the SNES/GEN ports but wasn't up to Arcade Standards ( I heard the Saturn did the best for porting )

Fatal Fury Special and Art of Fighting 2 (Japan only) were actually good port for the SNES/SFC with the 16-bit limits (Thanks TAKARA). heck i even enjoy myself World Heroes 2 for the snes.....can't say the same about Samurai Showdown, but i thought the genesis version was cool.

also, Capcom vs SNK was one of the best thing to ever happened in a crossover fighting genre. we need a sequel NOW!
