Local Retro Gaming Clubs/Groups

Post by bladerunner »

So I love retro gaming. Unfortunately for me, gaming is a solitary hobby. Sure I have friends who play CoD or Halo together (online only though), but modern games, specifically online games, just are not fun. There is no real social element. I really wish I knew more people who got together to play retro games because it seems it is only then that I find ownign my collection is really worth it. Again, I have friends who play a lot of modern games or old college friends who just play Warhammer, Magic or other table top games, but never retro video games. And when I meet other retro gamers, they seem to be a solitary lot and not too interested in gaming together. Maybe that isn't universally true, but it seems to be my experience. Honestly, I mainly hold onto my collection in the hopes that my kids (I only have 1 at the moment, an infant) will one day want to play some old games.

Maybe I am wrong, but I find most of the enjoyment I have playing Mario Kart 64, Contra, Tecmo Bowl, Punch Out, Guardian Heroes or whatever to be had with others. So all that said, does anyone else game with a group of people on a regular basis? I have often thought of trying to get people together locally who like retro games, but just never got around to doing it, despite the fact that it would be insanely awesome to shoot the breeze with other gamers, play games together, talk collecting and maybe even swap/borrow games or oogle over each others collections. There is a glut of table-top gaming clubs in my area, and I like those games, I just can't see myself investing money into a type of gaming that doesn't really get me going. And those folks thing old video games are cool, they are just too committed to Warhammer or Magic or something to think about buying old video games.

Idk, what are you're experiences?

I wish there was something like that where I live. I've long since moved away from the close friends I had in high school and college that played retro games with me. The local library here has a video game night but it's only for teenagers :-(

Summer of 2004.... what a great time. Just hung out and played games the whole time. We set a smaller TV (w/ Xbox and NES emu) on top of the main HDTV that had the PS2. Played alot of Battletoads that summer. Never could beat that game.

It sucks you can't find a group for retro games but maybe if you get your friends together even for lans it might one day lead to you guys playing retro games also. Just suggest t while lanning.

I'm trying to warm my friend up to the idea of getting a dreamcast and through that I shall warm him up to retro gaming. Once that happens me and him will be retro gaming alot. Another of my friends has a genny and n64 so we play Mario kart.
