I finally got an atari 2600. Any suggestions on games?

Post by mas »

Hi Everyone,
I finally got an atari 2600 wood panel with 2 paddles 2 controllers and 20 or so games and a top loader nes with 22 games all for 80.00. I never owned an atari but I want to write down what I got and what I want for games and tell me if i'm missing out on any gems.
Games that I own:
demon attack
jungle hunt
venture
popeye( I think it's a coleco version. I cant get it into the system)
defender
atlantis
thunderground
warlords
q bert
pac man(this game sucks so bad i actually played it for almost an hour)
megamania
river raid
missle command
air sea battle
asteroids
raiders of the loast ark
combat
enduro
tunnel runner
barnstorming
starmaster
astroblast
armor ambush
space attack
berzerk
Now I want ms.pac man, pac man jr, centipede, pitfall,mr.do,gyruss, popeye, mario bros, donkey kong, joust, space invader, kaboom, frogger, donkey kong, night driver, pole position, super breakout and yars revenge.
If anyone have any suggestions please let me know. I wanted the 7800 really bad but this will do just fine. Besides I have a nes and like many of you said in a previous post on either getting a 7800 or just buy nes ports the games on the nes look better and are cheaper to get.
Thanks for reading. Any suggestions will help.

Here's a few suggestions off the top of my head out of the ones that aren't listed:

Stargate/Defender II (Game goes under both names due to a trademark dispute, not sure which one is more uncommon): WAY better than the original Defender on the 2600 in every way, though the controls take some getting used to since it uses two joysticks (or better yet, Genesis controllers). One of the most impressive games on the console in my opinion. Amazingly it even puts the NES port to shame. It's one of the pricier 2600 games but it's well worth it if you're a fan of Defender.

Spider Fighter: Fun, fast and frantic shoot'em up.

Phoenix: Another Space Invaders clone but with a few interesting twists.

Galaxian: Really decent port, probably one of the better ports on the 2600. The graphics aren't arcade quality of course, but they're okay and the gameplay is intact.

Turmoil: Wow this game is weird and frenetic. I've seen it described as a 2D version of Tempest and that's fairly accurate. It's a lot of fun and very addictive.

Solaris: A space ship game with pseudo 3D graphics. It looks mindblowingly good for a 2600 game and is also one of the more fun titles on the console.

Vanguard: So-so port of the influential but mostly forgotten SNK shmup that has both vertical and horizontal scrolling levels and allows you to shoot in all directions. It's also mildly comparable to Konami's scramble since you need to collect fuel tanks. One of my personal favorites but others have called it just decent to good. It's a cheap one to find anyway.

Battlezone: Not very deep but what 2600 game is? Really fantastic graphics and does a better than expected job of replicating the arcade game.

Dig Dug: Can't go wrong with Dig Dug. A surprisingly good translation of this classic game.

Another one of these threads? When should I anticipate the "should I sell my atari to buy an nes" thread?

 I don't mind, gives me an excuse to talk about some of my favorite 2600 games which I don't get to do all that often anymore.

:) Good one. I know I have my flaws. Maybe I should sell my dreamcast collection for some atari carts.

Get both Pitfall games. They're the best the 2600 has to offer IMO, and certainly the best platformers on the system.

unless you want to collect the really rare stuff, you could find most every thing in the wild.

there are multiple copies of the same same. All of atari's eary games have a text cover. Later games do not.

Its up to you if you want to catch them all.

You can literally still find inexpensive sealed 2600 games out there depending on the title.

It goes to show you how ridiculously Atari overproduced cartridges, leading up to the '83 crash. They made millions more copies of some games than there were actual consoles to play them on.

And considering how many of those consoles are dead and buried today it leaves a huge over-supply of cartridges that don't have a huge demand.

Solaris was already mentioned, so I'll toss Radar Lock onto the pile as well. It runs on the Solaris engine and was a great late release.

Anything Activision is guaranteed to be a winner. I enjoyed Crackpots, Cosmic Commuter, Spider Fighter, Megamania, but my favorite by them is Seaquest. You can get into a zone playing that one.
