If I collected in four years

Post by scarper »

In a few weeks, I will enter my first year of college. Because of my being a college student, I likely won't be building up much of a collection at all, since having money will be futile. Most of my retro gaming will be done via emulation on a laptop, and using the few handhelds I still possess.

But in about four to five years, once I've graduated and started being all lifey and such, I'll wanna start building up a low key collection again. But then I got to wondering: All the prices for older SNES, Saturn, etc. games are stupidly increasing. Will there be anything left to collect by that time? Especially now that digital releases are becoming more and more of a thing.

The question does sound ridiculous, but still... Based on your predictions and conjectures, what may the game collecting scene be like in four years?

Dont worry too much, these games been around forever and they are still available. There's always someone buying and selling shit happens and people let go of stuff. In 4-5 years games will still be available just may have different prices and more patience to aquire..

I have no problem selling everything I have if I had too, just to do it all over again. I was just reading through my old post in my bst thread and alot of the stuff Ive sold through out the last couple years are back in my inventory as if they never left.. goodtimes :)

no matter what, keep some side money. At least a twenty or two.

You may not want to be collecting, but some irresistible deals may come around.

You dont want to kick yourself when you lose out on a super rare game for $5.00 that you saw in that thrift store.

There also may be some classmates that need some cash too. And if they're collectors as well, you can get some stuff from them.

I'm sure on weekends and time off from classes, you'll be retro hunting like the rest of us.

I'm sure in five years we'll be getting PS3 and 360 game for reall cheap. I can see it now.....

Stacks of PS3 games at the fleamarket: three for $10!
2600 and jr,5200,nes/top loader, master system, intellivision, TG-16, genesis 1,2,3, SNES, snesJR, CDX, 3DOfz10, gamegear, gameboy and pocket, GBC, sega saturn, PSOne w/screen, Virtual Boy, N64, NGPC, Gameboy Advance sp, Dreamcast, Black Dreamcast, oXBOX, Playstation 2, PStwo, Gamecube, gameboy player, DS lite,DSi XL, PSP1000/3000,Wii,PS3 120gb,3DSXL, xbox 360, PSvita, PS4

I'm also in college and consequently not collecting much myself. There are definitely some games I'm glad that I've managed to get ahold of these past few years (Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Dracula X, Misadventures of Tron Bonne, etc), but something you should keep in mind is that there are a lot of games that you could consider for this sort of thing. For instance, I've been looking for Hagane, Lufia 1/2, Mega Man 7/X3, and Metal Warriors for the SNES alone before they potentially go up in value. It's better to not worry too much about how things will be in my opinion, I've settled into just taking them as they come (of course, if I wasn't poor I might not be so accepting of those circumstances  )

Where are you going to go to college? If you don't mind my curiosity.

That will be a wonderful time.

I actually started collecting seriously my second year of college, buying a game here and there from the local store and online with some cash I put on the side from my campus job in the library AV center.

I already had a Genesis and a ton of games from when I was a kid though I had long since sold off my other older systems like my NES and Atari 2600.

The collecting was kicked off when I saw a Yobo NES clone and a yellow label copy the original Metroid. I bought them just to play through Metroid for the hell of it. Then I bought a few more NES games, then more Genesis games, then PlayStation games, then N64 games... But I only bought a little bit at a time and when I got good deals so money wasn't a big issue. It helped that I had fallen into a group of friends who were also enthusiastic about older games.

It's also worth noting that your concern about price is justified. This was only about seven years ago and stuff was a lot cheaper than what I see today. The yard sale and flea market pickings are still there but they've gotten slimmer.

That said I don't know for sure if the growing population of collectors and re-sellers is going to continue or if the bubble is going to burst and games will lose some of their value. A lot of titles have been talked up on the Internet and sky-rocketed because of that. Maybe as hype dies down prices will die down with it. Other collectibles like trading cards and comic books have gone through similar collectors booms and busts.

In any case I recommend what some of the others have said if you're not financially ready to get into collecting right now. Keep some cash aside and keep an eye out for good deals in the wild. Trust me as I speak from experience that you will kick yourself in the ass if you hold a rare and valuable game in your hand that someone is selling for a few dollars only to see it selling for over a hundred years later when you've started collecting.
