Love my Xbox. Don't play it as much as my 360 or DC these days, but I do play it once in a while and am very proud of what games I collected for it.
Pay around $30 to $40. I wouldn't pay any more unless its in amazing shape and CIB.
My favorite games:
Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast
XGRA
SVC Chaos
Capcom Classics Col. 1 and 2
Midway Arcade Classics 2 and 3
KOF Neowave
HOTD 3
Burnout Revenge
Xainide
Def Jam Fight For NY
Metal Slug 3
Metal Slug 4/5
Etc...

Worth it especially if you're a Sega fan. Outrun 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, etc.

Other than that, it's got a nice share of exclusives, and if you're the type who doesn't like playing PC games on a PC for whatever reason, there's a lot of solid PC ports on it too.

Lastly, games for it are crazy cheap.

Original Xbox was brilliant. I preferred it to the PS2 at the time as it had the ability to have custom soundtracks in most racing games as well as most multi-platform games running the smoothest. Particularly Burnout 3 which was the best version of the game! I find it often gets forgotten during that era as the PS2 was massive and the Cube had the classic franchises, whilst Xbox was just lauded as the place to play Halo. I recall playing the hilarious Armed & Dangerous, the brilliantly addictive Outrun 2, the tough as nails Ninja Gaiden and my favourite game for the system Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. You've also got some gems tucked away such as Shenmue 2 and Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow (still one of the greatest FPS games I've played).
It's not really a console I would want to play much though, it's just massive and ugly, and you can play the majority of games on an Xbox 360 with effectively the same controller.
Currently playing Splinter Cell: Blacklist

My original Xbox review:

Good Games. Terrible Controller.

Seriously though, if you can put up with the controller, which takes some getting used to, even with the smaller model (why the hell are start, back and the black and white buttons in such terrible locations?) there's a lot of stuff to enjoy - even if, like me, you're not really into the shooting and driving games the system is mostly known for. There's still great stuff like Psychonauts, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive and more to enjoy. Of the generation, it's easily my least favourite console - but there's enough there to make it worth buying imo.

This. My wife purchased an original Xbox for me about two years ago, and I very quickly acquired a very large collection of games for it. As a general rule, it is the best system for the last generation's multi-platform releases such as:

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance,
Beyond Good & Evil,
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and
Psychonauts.

It also has some excellent exclusives such as:

Gunvalkyrie,
Ninja Gaiden Black,
Panzer Dragoon Orta, and
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

Finally, it has some of the few FPS games that I have actually enjoyed:

Half-Life 2,
Halo: Combat Evolved, and
(the briliiant and under-rated) Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

I highly recommend acquiring a system if you find one at a good price.

$20 or $50 and up for a soft-modded one depending on the status of the HDD.

I never cared for the oXbox until I found out all the things you could do with a modded one. That's the main appeal to me. Although the library isn't necessarily bad I consider it to be the weakest of that generation's consoles library-wise by far. That said I own an oXbox and a good handful of games, and it also has a lot of definitive versions of games and great exclusives, I just don't think it stands up to the PS2 or GC or even comes close.

And yeah it looks atrocious, the (original) controller sucks, and it's comically huge.

That sounds right with regard to price. My wife purchased a "reconditioned" Xbox for about $25.

I also agree that the Xbox does not touch the PS2, but my collection of Xbox games has - surprisingly - overtaken my collection of NGC games. (That is likely because the games are so cheap and because I have a hard time turning down almost any $1 or $2 game...)

Finally, the thing is ridiculously large. It is built like a tank, however, and should last for some time.
