Lonely Videogame Worlds

Post by turbolegs »

I was compiling a list of my favorite games as a means of downsizing my collection and was suddenly struck by how many of them involve isolated locations and have a generally sombre atmosphere. For example, Metroid (NES), ICO & SOTC, Silent Hill 2, Tomb Raider 1, Resident Evil 1 etc and was wondering whether anybody else has a similar feeling with these games or any others?

Let me know your favorite lonely videogame world!

The King's Field games on PS1 & PS2 definitely fit the bill.

Wild Metal (Rockstar)
I'm one of the few gamers that probably loves this game. A lot of slow plodding hill climbing in desolated mountains.

Great topic!

I second Metroid. Even though I was only 5 when it came out, I remember truly experiencing that feeling of isolation. Like you had this giant task ahead of you, and no one to depend on but yourself. Exciting!

Id like to add Links Awakening. Even though you had lots of people around you, I always felt odd in that world. Of course at the end of the game I found out why!

Id really enjoy reading more about others' experiences with their lonely games. Just screaming out a title isnt very interesting :)

Darksiders

As I recall the game starts after all of human kind has been exterminated. You actually witness this happening in the first stage as you're playing through it.

Thanks, I don't feel so isolated in the hills now. In case you didn't notice, Click the link in that title. I reviewed the Dreamcast version, there is also a PC Freeware. :D

Back to the Topic - How about various Flight Sims? The long Flight to reach a target.

D (like Resident Evil, just with out the zombies, crows, dogs and humans. You're alone in a spooky castle, there are traps that can kill you and a final boss, but other than that, you are alone)
Myst
Portal (the first one)
Amnesia, Penumbra, Aliens vs Predator and System Shock 2 out of survival horror games.
I guess 7th guest counts as well

I dont think that Resident Evil and Silent Hill should count by the way, as they have normal human characters in them. Atleast you do feel isolated in Silent Hill 1 and 2. But to be honest I dont think that a games where you encounter monsters frequently should count in any case.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box
