Panzer Dragoon Saga & Daytona CCE Netlink

Post by Catch22 »

Just showing off... showed it at VFDC, but i'm sure it'll be more appreciated here :) Stumble upon the "rare and valuable Saturn games" editorial here, and was shocked, absolutely shocked that Daytona CCE Netlink was so expensive... but I should have known. Luckily, I take anally good car of my stuff, save everything in the package, and have friends that recommended I buy another copy of Saga.

I'm the original owner, bought fresh from the store. Used to be super involved with the "B" Video Game websites circa the "TK's Sega Saturn Page" days... did some game reviews and whatnot... oh the memories. These games were bought and played though (and played thoroughly), not bought to be looked at, well, except for the sealed Saga.

I saw a video on YouTube showing a person opening a sealed copy of Saga, and he, and others claimed it was a reseal. But judging from my copy and his descriptions, it was indeed a real deal sealed copy- he doesn't know it. This game was bought from Toy's N Joys in Hawaii, and they are notorious for not taking back opened games, and are a moms-n-pops type store. The later games released for the Saturn were sealed differently than the earlier games, and does not hat the seal overlap in the rear of the box.

Anal enough to save receipts! The opened one was bought from a store I hated going to, but they were one of the rare places that even had the game- sourced everywhere on Oahu, I was just glad to have played gotten my mits on it at the time.

Image
Funny about all the misinformation early-on on the internet about this game, reading some old posts. Bought two of em so I could play my brother in Arizona from here in Hawaii. Never got around to do it- glad I didn't give it to him cause it would be thrashed. Yeah, I GOT TWO!!!

Funny how being a hardcore Sega fan can automatically net you some really collectible games.

I think it's really cool that you can still play Saturn Netlink games, but I don't know how you actually *find* players. I'd love to have a copy of Datona and try to meet up with whatever uber-niche community is still playing it.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is pretty much my favorite Saturn game.

Yeah, would be nice if this game had an HD remake.

Nice! I never found Saga in stores back in the day, despite being a big fan of PD1 and Zwei. My memory of the time is kind of fuzzy, but it seems like the big stores had cleared out all their Saturn inventory by the time Saga came out. I finally tracked it down on eBay ten years ago for double what you paid.

I was interested in the NetLink back in the day, but all of my friends were heavily in the Nintendo camp, so I didn't have anyone to play against. Recently I've thought about getting one, but I would need to also get landline phone service, plus the only NetLink game I have is Saturn Bomberman. There's an almost-not-completely-dead NetLink community here: http://www.saturnleague.com

I don't have anything as rare as you, but I do have most of the "Treasured Standard USA Releases" from that list. It is kind of funny how popular the Saturn is now with collectors, considering how unpopular it was when it was a current system.

Sorry folks, not selling.

Yeah, Saga was very hard to find. I was very persistent in getting that copy from Electronics Boutique. Got home, opened it, played it to death. The reviews that came out pre release just made me want the game BAD.

The sealed PDS actually was bought from Toys N Joys here in Hawaii, a week after I got my first one. I saw it and I remembered a friend at the time, Joe Fongul, emailing me that I should pick up additional copies because it was gonna be rare. I didn't think it would have had this sort of demand though.

I used to run a Sega fan page called SEGA GAME-A-HOLIC, and Joe Fongul, who I met using the the Netlink on the Sega IRC chat room, contributed to the site with a weekly column with insider type Sega news. I don't know if he was working for Sega at the time, but he had some great info.

Anyway, yeah, I was, and still am a Sega head. Even though most others had Playstations, I knew the Saturn just had the better library, especially the Japanese only games like the KOF games, Street Fighter vs XMen with 4meg cart, Vampire Savior, 2d fighting games, Dead or Alive, etc, etc.

Most of the games I bought were imports, and just got the American versions so I could play them in english.

Wow, I have to say, I am jealous. Also, if I may ask, how are you able to set up a Netlink match in this day and age? I know there are Netlink Forums still around, but I have tried and failed many times to connect my Saturn to the Internet without paying for dial up.

Both players need analog phone service, and then one NetLink dials the other directly. My friends and I played Warcraft II on PC that way many times. Then you just pray that no one picks up the phone while you're playing. :)

Congrats on keeping them after all these years. I remember I was like you with the saturn. I bought every u.s.title within the span of two years. Everything was complete and my last title wasto get was panzer dragoon saga. I paid 30.00 at toys r us. It was on clearence or on sale. Then stupid me I sold everything for 250.00 for a ps2. WTF was I thinking about. Ohh well live and learn. Keep those games
