Games with New Game Plus modes (a list)

Post by Gamerforlife »

One of the things I love in video games is new game plus modes. I love the sense of being rewarded for my efforts in upgrading a character (or characters). It's even cooler when a new game plus mode opens up new challenges and new rewards. So I'd like get a nice list of all the games that feature this. This includes any game that allows you to replay levels with upgraded characters. Some games let you do this but don't have an official new game plus mode. The end result is basically the same though, you go through the game again and kick ass with your stronger character. I'll keep this post updated as we get more and more suggestions

So far we've got...

Batman Arkham City
Borderlands
Chrono Chross
Chrono Trigger
Dark Souls
Demon Souls
Diablo series
Dino Crisis 1 and 2
Disgaea series
Dragon Wars
Ico
Lollipop Chainsaw
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Metal Gear Solid
Ninja Gaiden II
No More Heroes
Painkiller
Parasite Eve
Ratchet and Clank series
Resident Evil 4
Silent Hill series
Xenoblade Chronicles
The Legend of Zelda (NES)
Zelda Wind Waker

An earlier 'kinda sorta' one was Dragon Wars. The game didn't change, but you could start again with your same characters and keep their stats and levels. You lost your equipment, but it still gave you an advantage. After 2 trips through the game with a party I was going to see if I could beat it a third time with my party going through naked, using just fists and spells. Unfortunately my save disk for corrupted at that point. :(

After you beat Wind Waker if you play again you get a color camera that can be used to make figurines in a special gallery off the main island of Forest Haven. I always thought that was pretty cool. That's the main one I can think of off the top of my head.

@ Gamer - This list can get HUGE, tons of games unlock stuff for another go. Will the OP be updated and alphabatized so it can become a tool to find titles? If you are doing this, it will be a very busy session. Here's a couple to add with the console its on.

PS1 Metal Gear Solid
Additional suits and weapon upgrades to replay in.

PS2 Ico (PAL) / PS3 ICO HD Rerelease
Second player can control Yorda on the second go around.

If the thread gets popular with a lot of responses and regular bumpage, I don't mind keeping an organized list going. I could maybe even keep it sorted by console. Just to be clear though, I was thinking more along the lines of games where you can run through them again (or replay levels) with a stronger, upgraded character, not just starting the game again with some kind of unlockable. The Dragon Wars post is a good example

I'll add one more to the list

Resident Evil 4 - Leon's health, carry case, and weapons can be upgraded throughout the game, and it carries over when you beat the game and play it again.

would the PS1 Parasite Eve count?

On the second time around, the chrysler buiding comes up and there are lots of different and difficult monsters ready to take a crack at you. It is an optional part of the game the second time you play it. I never beat it back then.

~~~
I think Disgaea does this as well.
If you beat the game you can replay it with all the same characters you created at the same levels. There was a restriction on the first play through on changing the characters type. But not on the second time.
This game and others in the series allow for crazy levels of customization/leveling-up.
Borderlands lets you do that. Stats and weapons carry over. The advantages are somewhat mitigated by having higher level enemies, though.
Eh, I dunno if that counts since you're playing on a different difficulty at that point. Though if people want to count it, then Diablo II and III do.
Also duuuuuuh the first Zelda with rearranged dungeons.
Not always. I like when the game evolves with you as well so it's even tougher, despite being higher leveled and with loads of equipment or whatever. IE, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls do this, in those you can just continually go through them practically endlessly and the enemies and bosses just keep getting tougher. I'm in the middle of a NG+ on Demon's Souls, it was brutal at first but from there it's been harder in some ways and not in others. Still working my way through Dark Souls which is just way longer, I have to imagine this one is brutal with NG+'s though.
These two are incredibly versatile games, things are missable, and stuff like that... so I think the NG+ feature is definitely amazing in this case. Going through the game with one character several times through, can surely be a drastically different experience everytime I'm sure.
So, as jfrost mentioned Borderlands is another good example of a game where the NG+ buffs up the enemies as well.
Diablo I also had multiple difficulty modes, just not for single player. You had to be in one of the multiplayer modes.
